Red Devils win second-straight dual team title

The Newton-Conover wrestling team clinched its second-straight 2A dual team state title on Saturday with a 44-15 victory against the Dixon Bulldogs.

That couldn’t be more true than in the case of Newton-Conover senior wrestler Junior Hewitt.

Following a two-year removal from wrestling after suffering a gruesome injury, Hewitt has proven himself a valuable asset for the Red Devils this season.

Indians' Carpenter signs with Limestone College

From St. Stephens High School to a Limestone College St. Bernard, Stephen Carpenter made his college decision official on Friday.

With his parents and head coach Wayne Hicks present, Carpenter signed to play for Limestone College this fall.

Red Devils win 2A West title again, back in finals

The Newton-Conover wrestling team has a chance to make history on Saturday — again.

The Red Devils (51-1) rolled past SD-7 mate West Caldwell and powerhouse Thomasville on their way to a second-straight 2A West Regional championship and berth in the 2A state title match.

Tigers are back in 3A dual team title match

The Fred T. Foard wrestling team has a chance at its second-straight 3A dual team championship on Saturday.

The Tigers defeated Enka and North Iredell to advance to the final, which will be against Morehead on the road Saturday.

3 area seniors make their college choices official

Several athletes in Catawba County made a splash on Wednesday for National Signing Day.

Three athletes — Maiden's Alex White, Newton-Conover's Nick Baker and St. Stephens' Alex Roarke — officially signed their National Letters of Intent with Colleges and Universities during the day.

Red Devils roll in first two rounds of duals

The Newton-Conover wrestling team was on cruise control of the first two rounds of the 2A dual team playoffs.

The Red Devils (49-1) recorded a total of 14 pins in a pair of wins against East Burke (54-21) and West Wilkes (52-18) to advance to Thursday’s third round.
