Stewart’s return sparks Panthers past Chiefs

Jonathan Stewart returned with a bang on Sunday.

The seventh year running back scored two touchdowns, leading the Carolina Panthers to a 26-14 win against the Kansas City Chiefs at Bank of America Stadium.

Hornets announce bid for '17, '18 All-Star Games

The Charlotte Hornets formally announced their bid for the 2017 or 2018 NBA All-Star Games during a press conference Tuesday.

The city of Charlotte last hosted an NBA All-Star Game in 1991 at the old Charlotte Coliseum. The East defeated the West in that contest, 116-114, before a sold-out crowd of 23,530 fans.

August 11th

PREP FOOTBALL: Scrimmage postponed on Monday

August 11, 2014

Weather on Monday has affected the prep football scrimmage schedule.

Bandys, which was supposed to host South Point and South Iredell in a tri-scrimmmage at 6 p.m. Monday, has postponed that scrimmage until the same time on Wednesday.

The scrimmage between Maiden and Watauga in Boone is still on as of noon Monday.

Ex-rivals Bumgarner, Fleming on same side of ball

Two years ago, Zach Bumgarner and Tanner Fleming were battling each other as rivals on the prep gridiron.

Now, both Charlotte 49er football players share the same side of the field heading into the program’s second-ever season.

Bumgarner, who played offensive tackle and served as longsnapper last season, made the move to defensive line this past season and changed his physique.

August 7th

Red Devils hold first contact practice of preseason

August 8, 2014

Thursday was the first official day of contact practice for prep football teams in North Carolina.

Newton-Conover hosted its first contact drills at the team’s practice field on Thursday.

85 Tigers take field at Foard football practice

August 6, 2014

The Fred T. Foard Tigers continued football practices on Wednesday.

A total of 85 players suited up for Foard, including 45 on the varsity squad and 40 on the junior varsity level.

92 campers learn drills, skills at Indian Football Camp

St. Stephens received a high turnout from its youth football camp this week.

A total of 92 young people from second through eighth grade were at the camp for its second day on Tuesday.

85 Red Devils hit the field in pads on Monday

The third official practice for high school football teams took place Monday, including at Newton-Conover High School.

It was the first of the practices in the afternoon for the Red Devils and also the first in shoulder pads, testing N-CHS’s football players.

Back-up Derek Anderson on standby as QB, father

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Derek Anderson has to be ready at a moment’s notice.

The Carolina Panthers back-up quarterback is not only prepared to step in to play if starter Cam Newton takes place, but also is preparing to become a father.

Despite receiving multiple offers in the offseason, Anderson re-signed with the Panthers on March 14.

Dale Jarrett starts longtime tradition at Brickyard

Twenty years since the first-ever Brickyard 400, Conover native Dale Jarrett reflected this week on his two victories at the prestigious event.

Despite two drivers — Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt — winning at Indiapolis in the Sprint Cup Series before him, Jarrett was the first driver to “kiss the bricks” following his first of two victories at the Brickyard back in 1996.
