3 area seniors make their college choices official

Several athletes in Catawba County made a splash on Wednesday for National Signing Day.

Three athletes — Maiden's Alex White, Newton-Conover's Nick Baker and St. Stephens' Alex Roarke — officially signed their National Letters of Intent with Colleges and Universities during the day.

Red Devils roll in first two rounds of duals

February 5, 2014

The Newton-Conover wrestling team was on cruise control of the first two rounds of the 2A dual team playoffs.

The Red Devils (49-1) recorded a total of 14 pins in a pair of wins against East Burke (54-21) and West Wilkes (52-18) to advance to Thursday’s third round.

Host Red Devils win SD-7 wrestling tournament

February 4, 2014

The Newton-Conover wrestling team defended home turf on Saturday at the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A tournament.

The host Red Devils won the event by tallying 224.5 total points to second-place West Caldwell’s 159 points

Tigers claim Northwestern 3A/4A wrestling title

February 3, 2014

The Fred T. Foard wrestling team claimed the Northwestern 3A/4A championship during Saturday’s conference match at Patton High School.

The Tigers tallied 243.5 points, which was better than St. Stephens’ 156 points.

Lady Trojans roll to their 17th win of the season

February 1, 2014

Nobody has been able to stop the Bandys girls basketball team this entire season.

After Friday, you can add Lincolnton to the list of unsuccessful challengers.

The Lady Trojans pulled ahead 35-7 after one quarter on their way to a 94-26 win against the Lady Wolves.

Bandys improves to 17-0 overall and 8-0 in conference games.

Red Devils top Blue Devils on wrestling mat

The Newton-Conover wrestling team didn’t slow down on Thursday against Maiden after nearly a week long layoff from being on the mat.

The Red Devils defeated the Blue Devils on the road, 62-6 — finishing the regular season unbeaten in Southern District 7 Athletic 2A matches.
