5 Catawba County athletes punch regional tickets

The Southern District 7 Athletic 2A tennis tournament held its first of two days of competition on Tuesday at Maiden High School.

Four singles players punched their tickets to the 2A West Regionals, while in doubles, Newton-Conover’s Brittany Connor and Lauren Dillard were one of three teams who advanced to Regionals.

Red Devils fall one spot in latest AP football poll

Despite a rivalry win against Maiden on Saturday, the Newton-Conover football team fell one spot in the latest Associated Press 2A poll released on Tuesday.

The Red Devils (5-0-1, 2-0) received more votes this week (62) than they did in last week’s poll (60), but were surpassed by Franklin.

N-C's Ramseur, Fleming selected to Shrine Bowl

Entering Monday, Newton-Conover’s football program never had more than one selection to the prestigious Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas.

A pair of 2014 Red Devils have made the cut for the annual high school football all-star game held in December.

Wide receiver Josh Ramseur and defensive back Tyrell Fleming will play in the contest held at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C. on Dec. 20.

Panthers erase deficit, end skid with win over Bears

Only fitting that Sunday's NFL match up between Carolina and Chicago came down to the play of a former Bear.

Tight end Greg Olsen caught two touchdown passes, helping the Panthers erase an early deficit and end a two-game losing streak with a 31-24 victory.

Niners fall behind early, lose 27-24 to Bulldogs

Falling behind 14-3 early against Gardner-Webb, the UNC Charlotte football team was faced with an uphill task.

The 49ers dropped their third-straight game by a touchdown or less to the Bulldogs on Saturday in Boiling Springs, 27-24.

Matt Johnson led the Niners, completing 12-of-27 passes for 255 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Bears stay perfect on the year, beat Tornados, 48-17

The No. 6 Lenoir-Rhyne football team matched its best start since 1962 with a 48-17 win over Brevard on Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference action.

Lenoir-Rhyne senior quarterback Miles Freeman rushed for three scores and passed for another as the Bears built a 41-0 halftime lead en route to the easy win at Brevard Memorial Stadium.

Roberts, Red Devils run past rival Maiden, 43-35

Struggling with the passing game early on in its football game against Maiden, the versatile Newton-Conover offense turned to its running attack.

The Red Devils grounded and pounded their way to 349 rushing yards, running by the rival Blue Devils, 43-35, at Gurley Stadium on Saturday.

Two late defensive stops help Bandys defeat Warriors

Up three points and giving West Caldwell the ball twice with just over four minutes left, the Bandys defense made a stand Friday night during its Homecoming football game.

Pioneers use strong second half to defeat Tigers

October 3, 2014

Down just 21-13 at halftime, Fred T. Foard was on the cusp of a huge win Friday in Boone against Watauga.

However, the Tigers collapsed in the second half, falling 42-13 to the Pioneers.
