The 24-year-old Carolina Panthers quarterback continued to show signs of maturity, leading his team to a thrilling 24-20 victory at Bank of America Stadium.

Hornets force 5 turnovers, win Southeast tournament

NEWTON — The Catawba County Hornets capped their dream season on Saturday with a 30-8 win against the Carolina Thundering Herd at Westside/Jaycee Park.

With the victory, the Hornets complete 2013 with a 15-0 record.

Bears win 10-straight for first time in history

SALISBURY — The Lenoir-Rhyne football team won its 10th consecutive game with a 48-15 triumph over Catawba in a South Atlantic Conference contest and regular season finale Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.

L-R (10-1, 7-0), ranked No. 14 in NCAA Div. II, rushed for 445 yards on the day.

Aerial attack leads Blue Devils past Falcons

MAIDEN — Tuning up for a rematch with East Lincoln, the Maiden football team’s offense kicked it into overdrive.

Quarterback Jake McRee threw five touchdown passes, including three to Kyle Kelly, leading the Blue Devils to a 35-0 victory against Forbush at Blue Devil Stadium.

Bears advance; Bandys, Hickory eliminated

WEST JEFFERSON — Bunker Hill overcame six turnovers to defeat Ashe County, 20-17, on Friday in the first round of the 2A playoffs.

In other playoff action, Bandys lost a close road game to conference rival East Lincoln, while Hickory fell by two touchdowns to Pisgah in Canton.

Wepner, Palozzi earn top SD-7 soccer honors

A pair of Newton-Conover soccer members earned top honors in the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A in 2013-14.

The Red Devils' Franklin Wepner was awarded the conference's Offensive Player of the Year, while Angelo Palozzi was named SD-7 Coach of the Year.

Seven Catawba County athletes sign with colleges

Seven Catawba County athletes, including two each at Bandys, Bunker Hill and St. Stephens high school, signed with college and universities on Wednesday.

BREAKING: Russell resigns as Red Devils' coach

November 13, 2013

NEWTON — After a 2-9 season and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2004, Brint Russell has resigned as the head football coach at Newton-Conover High School.

Russell submitted his official letter of resignation on Wednesday to Newton-Conover City School officials.

The search for a new head varsity football coach will start immediately.
