Bumgarner blanks Braves, tosses two-hitter in 6-0 win

Madison Bumgarner was magic on the mound Friday in Georgia in front of 40 of his closest family and friends.

The former South Caldwell High and current San Francisco Giants pitcher tossed a two-hit gem in a 6-0 victory against the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field.

Bumgarner spoke after Friday's game that he knew "after the first out" of his potential perfect game and no-hit performances.

Six-run fourth lifts Hickory over top of Ashevile

Despite having nearly a week off from competition, Hickory Post 48 picked up where it left off on Friday.

A six-run top of the fourth lifted Hickory to a Area IV West Division victory against Asheville.

Post 48 improves to 8-3 overall and 4-2 in divisional games.

Cowboys teams competing in Superbowl on Saturday

The Conover Cowboys youth football organization is competing for titles on Saturday.

The Cowboys varsity, junior varsity and mighty mites teams play Saturday at Rocky River High School in Mint Hill to try and win a trio of National Spring Youth Football League (NSYFL) championships.

Beyond words: Lucas lets his play do the talking

Born with a stutter in his voice, Greg Lucas has done nothing so far this summer season to show he is sputtered on the baseball diamond.

The Post 48 pitcher and first baseman has stepped up when his team needed him the most and became a quiet leader on the Hickory squad.

Lucas has battled stuttering from a very early age.

Bandys' Harvey expected to sign with O's next week

Bandys' Hunter Harvey is expecting to sign a contract with the Baltimore Orioles next week and start his journey through the minor league system.

The 6-foot-3 pitcher was taken No. 22 overall by the Orioles in last Thursday's Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.

Harvey said on Wednesday that he expects to be the last of the 41 players drafted by Baltimore to sign their deal.

Heat kick off first season with losses to Kings Mtn.

In its first season of competition, the Carolina Heat Post 240 kicked off its inaugural campaign of American Legion baseball on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Kings Mountain Post 155.

The Heat's much anticipated debut was spoiled with Kings Mountain sweeping both games at Newton-Conover High School.

Patrick Ewing will join the Charlotte Bobcats as the team's next associate head coach, according to multiple media sources.

Ewing spent five seasons (2007-12) as an assistant coach with the Orlando Magic — all with former Magic assistant and new Bobcats head coach Steve Clifford.

Hickory heads into nearly a week-long break from American Legion baseball competition with a full head of steam.

Post 48 tallied 12 hits on Sunday — three of them off of the bat of catcher Luke Barton — in a 9-0 six-inning victory against Hammond Post 3.

Hill finishes college career as 10-time All-American

Former Hickory High and current N.C. State track and field standout Ryan Hill ended his collegiate career on Saturday.

Hill finished in ninth place in the 1,500-meter final during Saturday's NCAA Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

Kelly's two HRs lifts Hickory past Kings Mountain

Kyle Kelly made the best of his first appearance at the plate for Post 48 on Saturday.

Kelly connected on two home runs in his five at bats of the season against Kings Mountain, helping lead Hickory to a 8-4 road victory.

Entering Saturday, Kelly had played in three games — all on the mound as a pitcher.
