Athletic director Billy Leeson leaving Red Devils

August 26, 2013

Newton-Conover High School is in search of a new athletic director.

Billy Leeson, who has been AD at the school since March 2012, is leaving to take a position at a middle school in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System.

Leeson is a former dean of students at Vance High School. He has 11 total years of experience in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System.

Fumbles cost Red Devils in 38-34 loss to Chase

Leading 34-20 heading into the fourth quarter, victory slipped out of the grasp of the Newton-Conover football team.

The Red Devils fumbled twice in the final 3:50 of Friday's game against Chase, allowing the Trojans to come away with a 38-34 victory at Gurley Stadium.

Blue Devils stop Tigers in Harper's debut, 48-20

Former SD-7 squads Maiden and Fred T. Foard collided on the gridiron Friday with the Blue Devils coming away with a 48-20 victory against the Tigers.

Jake McRee threw for 295 yards and five touchdowns in the contest to lead the Maiden (1-0).

Kyle Kelly and T.J. Vick each caught two touchdown passes from McRee, while the other touchdown through the air went to Alex White.

Trojans usher in Lowman era, top Indians 41-16

Trent Lowman's first football game as a senior football player at Bandys High School happened to be against St. Stephens.

Only fitting his first game as a Trojan head coach was against the Indians.

Bandys pulled together an impressive 41-16 victory over St. Stephens on Friday, successfully ushering in the Trent Lowman era.

Maiden's Huff rushes for 301, scores 5 times in win

August 22, 2013

Running back Xzavion Huff made a huge impression in his first-ever junior varsity football game.

The 5-foot-8, 157-pound freshman scored five times and rushed 10 times for 301 yards in Maiden’s 58-28 win against Fred T. Foard on Thursday.

Huff also completed two passes in the contest for 41 yards.

Former Trojan Harper joins L-R Bears coaching staff

August 22, 2013

Former Bandys High standout wide receiver Justin Harper is returning to the area to coach.

Harper will serve as an assistant wide receivers coach under Sam Perryman and also serve on the staff under Lenoir-Rhyne head football coach Mike Houston.

Houston has a close relationship with Harper.

Maiden grad Kevin Wilson keeps close to his roots

Despite being more than 500 miles and close to 10 hours away, Kevin Wilson doesn’t forget about Catawba County.

The Maiden graduate and current University of Indiana head football coach remains close to his county ties and is also trying to forge his own path with the Hoosiers.

Wilson knew from a very young age that he wanted to get into the coaching profession.
