HICKORY â€” It's not necessarily how you start, but how you finish.
That mantra couldn't be more true than the performance Wednesday by the St. Stephens volleyball team.
The Lady Indians were able to overcome some nerves at the beginning of their match against rival Hickory on their way to a 3-1 conference road win.

Newton-Conover volleyball coach Linda Richards was honored on Tuesday for her history 500th win last week.
The Lady Red Devils responded by saluting their coach the best way they knew how â€” winning.
Newton-Conover pulled out to early leads in its first two sets against Maiden and pulled away at the end for a four-set home victory in conference play.
The Maiden football team entered the Top 10 of the Associated Press prep football poll for this first time this seson on Tuesday.
The Blue Devils (5-0, 1-0 in SD-7) are coming off of a 38-17 victory against rival Bunker Hill in Claremont this past Friday.

Until this season, Jâ€™len Wilson hadnâ€™t played a competitive snap of football since middle school.
The Bunker Hill junior made a return this fall to the gridiron, where he is making an impact on the Bears squad.

CLAREMONT â€”Â Maiden's football game on Friday night against Bunker Hill wasn't pretty, but it was effective.
The Blue Devils (5-0, 1-0) were able to overcome several miscues to come way with a 38-17 SD-7 win against the Bears.
NEWTON â€”Â Nick Baker scored three touchdowns on the ground to lead Newton-Conover past West Caldwell, 47-7.
Baker, who returned from an ankle injury, tallied 133 yards on nine carries.
