Hickory's Linebarger wins first Golden Helmet award

Hickory High running back Jahiz Linebarger was presented with the first Coca-Cola Golden Helmet Award of the season on Tuesday.

Linebarger, who also plays defensive back for the Red Tornadoes, helped rally Hickory to a 25-20 road victory against Statesville this past Friday.

He rushed for over 110 yards with two touchdowns against Statesville — part of 25 unanswered points in the contest.

Maiden resident Cherry named top rookie angler

August 27, 2013

Maiden resident and angler Hank Cherry is the Bassmaster Elite Series Rookie of the Year.

“Rookie of the year is a great foundation for my career,” Cherry said. “The guys in this rookie class are all great anglers, and it was a real accomplishment to come out on top. I’m going to build from here and someday get an Angler of the Year title.”

BREAKING: Foard QB Matt Williams out for season

August 26, 2013

Fred T. Foard junior quarterback Matt Williams will miss the rest of the prep football season after breaking his left leg in this past Friday's game against Maiden.

Williams broke his left tibia/shin bone in two places in the contest, which the Tigers lost at home, 48-20.

With Williams being sidelined, the door is now open for someone to step in to his starting role.

Hornets hold Vikings to 28 yards of offense in shutout

The Catawba County Hornets continued their defensive dominance on the gridiron Saturday against the Upstate Vikings.

The Hornets held the Vikings to 28 yards of total offense in a 28-0 victory at Westside/Jaycee Park.

Athletic director Billy Leeson leaving Red Devils

August 26, 2013

Newton-Conover High School is in search of a new athletic director.

Billy Leeson, who has been AD at the school since March 2012, is leaving to take a position at a middle school in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System.

Leeson is a former dean of students at Vance High School. He has 11 total years of experience in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System.

Fumbles cost Red Devils in 38-34 loss to Chase

Leading 34-20 heading into the fourth quarter, victory slipped out of the grasp of the Newton-Conover football team.

The Red Devils fumbled twice in the final 3:50 of Friday's game against Chase, allowing the Trojans to come away with a 38-34 victory at Gurley Stadium.

Blue Devils stop Tigers in Harper's debut, 48-20

August 23, 2013

Former SD-7 squads Maiden and Fred T. Foard collided on the gridiron Friday with the Blue Devils coming away with a 48-20 victory against the Tigers.

Jake McRee threw for 295 yards and five touchdowns in the contest to lead the Maiden (1-0).

Kyle Kelly and T.J. Vick each caught two touchdown passes from McRee, while the other touchdown through the air went to Alex White.
