Prep football teams open practice starting today

July 31, 2013

Today is the first official day designated by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) for fall sports practices and tryouts.

Bandys and Maiden high schools are the first of the teams to officially kick off their 2013 campaign.

Both squads are the only two schools with practices in the morning at 9 a.m.

Former Tiger lineman Tanner Fleming joins 49ers

Former Fred T. Foard standout Tanner Fleming officially joined the UNC-Charlotte football team on Wednesday.

Fleming, who played offensive and defensive line for the Tigers during his senior season in 2011, spent last year at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Gerald Henderson returning to the Charlotte Bobcats

The Charlotte Bobcats have re-signed shooting guard Gerald Henderson.

The 2009 first round pick out of Duke University has signed a deal reportedly worth three years and $18 million.

Henderson’s contract also includes a player option after the 2014-15 NBA season.

‘It’s a New Day’ for Tigers under new coach Harper

The Fred T. Foard football program waited nearly all summer to gets it first action in 2013, but it finally did on Tuesday.

The Tigers participated in its first 7-on-7 drills at Rudisill Stadium on the campus of Cherryville High School.

Among the teams involved in the 7-on-7 drills were the Tigers, the Ironmen, Bessemer City and Lincolnton.

Prep football teams open practice on Thursday

All seven of Catawba County's prep football teams officially open practice on Thursday.

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association designates Thursday as the first official tryouts and/or practice for all fall sports teams, including football, cross-country, volleyball, girl's golf and boy's soccer.

The 19-year-old is in his first full season of minor league baseball in 2013. The biggest hurdle Brinson has had to overcome is the team’s more than 100-game schedule.

Texas-born Williams playing well despite early injury

After suffering an injury earlier this season, Nick Williams is making up for lost time.

The Galveston, Texas native has bounced back from a debilitating ailment to have a breakthrough season on the diamond in 2013.

Williams and his brother both grew up Texas Ranger fans.

Hornets open their home schedule on Saturday

The Catawba County Hornets kick off the home portion of their season on Saturday against their toughest test yet.

The Hornets face the Carolina Colts in a battle of unbeaten and ranked semi-pro football teams at 8 p.m. at Westside/Jaycee Park.
