PREP NOTEBOOK: Friday's prep basketball scores

Bandys 86, Cherryville 18

The Lady Trojans improve to 4-0 with a 68-point victory Friday.

Madi Story scored 14 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and made six steals in the Bandys victory. Sara Goble scored 13 points, while Morgan Bibey, Sierra Brotherton and Alex Wagner each tallied 10 points.

Volunteer cross-country coach Lomax passes away

A longtime volunteer track and field coach for Maiden and Fred T. Foard high schools passed away this week.

Ricky Lomax, who spent time with both the Blue Devils’ and Tigers’ track and field programs, passed away this past Sunday at his home. He was 54 years old.

CVCC wins 7th game, knocks off Montreat JVs

The Catawba Valley Community College men’s basketball team ended a two-game losing streak with a 82-62 victory against the Montreat College JV squad on Thursday at the Tarlton Complex.

St. Stephens' Dylan Beiland signs with N.C. Central

St. Stephens High School added another name to its list of athletes already signed to play college sports next fall.

Senior baseball player Dylan Beiland signed with North Carolina Central University on Thursday.

Former, current Trojans reflect on coach Lowman

After 26 years as head football coach at Bandys High School, Randy Lowman has coached hundreds of players on the field.

Some of Lowman's former and current players reflected on their coach after learning of his retirement on Wednesday.

Smith's buzzer beater sinks Charlotte, 100-98

Down its closer in Carmelo Anthony late in Wednesday's game against the Charlotte Bobcats, the New York Knicks turned to J.R. Smith.

He made a very worthy replacement.

Smith nailed a 20-foot fadeaway jump shot over top of Bobcats' rookie Michael Kidd-Gilchrist to lift the Knicks to a 100-98 victory in dramatic fashion at Time Warner Cable Arena.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Lady Trojans win by 51 points

Brittany Moss scored 23 points to help the Bandys girls basketball team come away with a 51-point victory Wednesday in Hickory against St. Stephens, 102-51.

Haleigh Lackey added 18 points and Morgan Bibey chipped in 17 points for Bandys (3-0).

Autumn Williams led Saint (1-3) with 15 points, while Jodi Kerley added 13 points.

BREAKING: Lowman retires as Bandys football coach

December 5, 2012

Bandys football coach Randy Lowman is retiring after 26 years as head coach, the school announced on Wednesday.

Lowman, 58, is also leaving his teaching and athletic director positions. His last day at the school will be Dec. 31.

In 26 years as the leader of the Trojans' football program, Lowman tallied a 206-118-1 overall record, including a 104-75 mark in conference play.

Petty, Shuford guide N-C in a pair of victories

The Newton-Conover basketball program picked up a pair of victories on Tuesday in boys and girls competition against East Lincoln.

The Lady Red Devils notched their second win of the season easily by double digits, while the N-C boys basketball team held off a late rally by the Mustangs to come away with their first victory.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Tigers sweep Bears on court

December 5, 2012

The Fred T. Foard girls basketball team bounced back from a difficult opening loss this past Friday with a 67-32 victory against Bunker Hill on Tuesday.

Kayla Whitworth led Foard (1-1) with 16 points, Chelsea Turner added 13 points and Sadasia Tipps tallied 12 points.

Bunker Hill (0-3) was led by a trio of scorers, including Montana Lineberger, Tyra Mitchell and Anna Williams.
