Trying not to fall behind the competition, the Conover Cowboys decided to put a little spring in their step.
The Cowboys youth football program, which involves more than 60 kids ages 7-12 through Newton, Conover and surrounding areas, joined the North Carolina Spring Football League (NSFL) of Charlotte.
Top-seeded Draughn, along with South Iredell, Maiden and Bunker Hill, advanced to the second round of the Catawba Valley 2A baseball tournament.
The Wildcats play the Vikings today at 4:30 p.m. at L.P. Frans Stadium, while the Blue Devils and Bears play in the nightcap at 7 p.m.

Despite a two-RBI performance from center fielder Jordan Akins, the Hickory Crawdads dropped their second-straight road contest to the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Thursday, 7-3.
First baseman Aaron Seene led the 'Hoppers (18-8), going 1-for-3 from the plate with a home run in the bottom of the eighth inning that plated two runs.

CHARLOTTE — Two people familiar with the situation say Charlotte is leaving the Atlantic 10 and rejoining Conference USA in the 2013-14 season.
The people spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because an announcement has not yet been made. The university has scheduled a Friday news conference.
A vote to remove non-boarding parochial schools from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association has failed.
The NCHSAA sent a ballot to its 390 schools last month allowing principals to vote on changing a rule that allows Charlotte Catholic, Kernersville McGuinness and Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons to be members in the organization.
