Following a second six-year tenure as Bandys girls basketball coach, Beth Queen is stepping down.
Queen, who has spent 16 seasons as a player and coach at the school, said she knew before this past season started that it would be her last.
“That was part of my plan the whole time,” Queen said. “When I came back six years ago, the Bandys girls basketball program wasn’t very successful. I wanted to rebuild the program. At that time, it was my intention to stay six years.”
Queen coached the Trojans from 1998-2003 before leaving to spend time with her family
Capping a stellar prep basketball career, Newton-Conover’s Shynese Whitener was named the 2012 District 10 girls basketball player of the year by the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association (NCBCA).
Receiving the honor caught the senior off guard.
“I’m definitely surprised,” Whitener said. “I’m still shocked. It’s an honor to receive this award. It was fun just going out every night, having my teammates support and playing basketball. It goes to show you that hard work pays off.”
Two of the best tennis teams in the Catawba Valley 2A collided Tuesday in Newton.
When the dust settled, Newton-Conover had notched its 64th straight home conference victory with a 7-2 win against Maiden.
“This was biggest hurdle in that winning streak,” said N-C coach Brian Tate. “This is probably the least inexperienced team I’ve ever had since I’ve been here. We’re getting better.”
Newton-Conover High School's new athletic director says he wants to take the Red Devils sports program to the next level.
School district leaders say he has the athletic and administrative experience to do it.
Billy Leeson was hired this month to serve as NCHS's athletic director and assistant principal.
While Newton-Conover golfer Lee Mitchell may be the “new kid on the block,” he certainly didn’t play that way Monday.
The senior, who came to Newton-Conover from Alabama, shot a 1-under-par 34 on the back nine of the Jackson Course at Rock Barn to medal and lift the Red Devils to a big non-conference match victory.
Mitchell, who played in a group with Maiden’s Thomas Lilly and Bunker Hill’s Tyler Lail, held his own against two of the top CVAC golfers in 2011.
Mitchell’s round included birdies on holes three, seven and nine.
Avenging a loss to Cherryville three days prior, the Bunker Hill girls soccer team earned its first victory of the season Monday, 5-2.
Wilbelis Rojas pocked five goals for the Lady Bears (1-5). She has eight goals on the season.
Alondra Zavala added a goal for Bunker Hill in the third minute. Yesenia Chavez, Getzi Tiscareno, Rosa Zavala and Patricia Chavez assisted on the goals scored.
In goal, Kristina Lo had five saves, including a penalty kick save.

NEW ORLEANS — When the Hornets' Trevor Ariza faked a pass and bolted past Gerald Henderson in the final seconds, Henderson suspected Ariza's lane to the hoop for a potential game-tying score wasn't quite as open as it looked.
Ariza still had to contend with Bobcats rookie Bismack Biyombo, who knew better than to stray too far from the hoop with the game in the balance.
Biyombo went up with both arms extended and blocked Ariza's driving dunk attempt, allowing the Charlotte Bobcats to celebrate a 73-71 victory in the Big Easy on Monday night.
