Former 'Dads reflect on the team’s past at Hot Stove

Kicking off their 20th anniversary campaign in style, the Hickory Crawdads hosted their annual Hot Stove Banquet at Rock Barn Golf and Spa on Monday.

The event featured a number of guest speakers, including former ‘Dads general manager Marty Steele and former Hickory players Josh Bonifay (2000-01), Chris Mader (1993-94) and Jason Evans (1993).

Steele, who was team’s first-ever general manager, recanted the first opening day at its new stadium.

31 county wrestlers ranked in the state

The latest individual state prep wrestling polls include 31 Catawba County athletes ranked in the top 10 of their respective weight classes.

The Retrorankings.com lists include 16 area wrestlers in the 2A ranks and 15 in the 3A ranks.

Four wrestlers from three schools are also ranked atop their respective weight classes. They include Newton-Conover’s Ian Canrobert at 106, Foard’s Caleb Griffin at 120, St. Stephens’ Ian Martin at 138 and Foard’s Hayden Albert at 160.

Carolina Panthers change logo for first time

CHARLOTTE — The Carolina Panthers have a new look.

For the first time since joining the league in 1995, the Panthers have changed their logo. According to a press release Sunday night, the logo has been designed to provide a "more aggressive, contemporary look to the logo while making it more three-dimensional for ever-increasing digital use."

The Panthers will transition to the refined logo throughout 2012.

The primary tweaks made by the creative department of the National Football League are primarily in the features in the eye and mouth.

McGee's leads Wizards over Bobcats again 102-99

CHARLOTTE — The Washington Wizards may have found the recipe for winning this season: playing the Charlotte Bobcats.

Well, that and a balanced offensive attack.

The Wizards (4-16) defeated the Bobcats for the second time in four nights Saturday 102-99 as six players scored in double digits, including JaVale McGee, who led the way with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

The week's two wins equal the Wizards' total number of victories in their first 17 games combined.

CVCC men top Pitt, Lady Bucs fall to Lenoir

The CVCC men's basketball team overcame a 19-point deficit to win by one point, 71-70, against Region 10 foe Pitt Community College on Saturday.

Jalen Cannady carried the Bucs (8-11) with 31 points. Will White added 12 points in the CVCC victory.

Chris McLawhorn guided Pitt with 14 points.

CVCC men's basketball team holds its next game Friday against Lenoir Community College at 7 p.m.

Lenoir 62, CVCC 53

Despite 19 points from freshman Brianna Mitchell, the Lady Bucs lost a heartbreaker to Lenoir Community College on the basketball court Saturday.

Red Devils shutout Cavaliers on mat

Newton-Conover improved to 37-2 overall and 6-0 in the CVAC on the wrestling mat Friday with a convincing 76-0 victory against East Burke in Icard.

The Red Devils earned five pins in the match, including Ian Canrobert (40-2), Coleman Carter (30-8), Kyle Toomey (17-12), Tyler Benfield (38-3) and Jaron Pitts (23-13).

PREP NOTEBOOK: Bandys girls bounce back

Madi Story scored 17 points and Brittany Moss added 15 points, lifting the Bandys girls basketball team to the bounce-back victory against West Caldwell.

Story also collected eight rebounds for the Lady Trojans (18-1, 9-1), along with teammate Taylor Sigmon.

Ravin Carter led West Caldwell (7-8, 5-4) with 20 points, while Brittany Dixon chipped in 17 points.

Hibriten 50, St. Stephens

Keisha Corpening scored 37 points to lift the Lady Panthers (5-11, 2-6) to the Northwestern Conference win against the Lady Indians (3-17, 0-8).

76ers rout Bobcats in front of 'Fresh Prince'

PHILADELPHIA — Lou Williams scored 17 points and Jrue Holiday had 15 to help the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Charlotte Bobcats 89-72 on Friday night.

Jodie Meeks scored 14 points for the Sixers, who bounced back from a rare home loss and still haven't lost two straight games all season.

MMA event returns to Hickory in February

For the second time in two months, the sport of mixed martial arts will visit Hickory.

Elite Championship Cage Fighting (ECCF) is hosting a second event at the Freedom Center, following a successful first event in December.
The first fight drew 374 people to the center.

“We did not expect that many people,” said CWK Promotions President and CEO Casey Jenkins. “(ECCF) expected a few people to come, but we weren’t sure because MMA had never been in Hickory before.”
