Franklin Wepner brings a whole new definition to multi-tasking.

Coming off a successful season on the soccer field, the Newton-Conover junior is aiming to win a second state wrestling title on the mat this winter.

Indian Classic adds to its history on Saturday

St. Stephens High School hosts the Indian Classic wrestling tournament for the 41st time in its history on Saturday.

The event is the oldest one-day high school wrestling tournament in North Carolina.

Earnhardt Jr. wins 10th most popular driver award

Dale Earnhardt Jr. tied Bill Elliott's record of 10 consecutive wins as NASCAR's most popular driver, and was just as nervous accepting it Thursday as he was when he received his first honor.

Indians tune up for Classic with pair of wins

The St. Stephens wrestling team tuned up for Saturday's 41st Annual Indian Classic by hosting a tri-match with Ashbrook and Ashe County on Wednesday.

The Indians swept their matches on the evening, improving to 5-2 on the season.

Bucs fall 68-62 to ninth-ranked Spartanburg Methodist

The CVCC men's basketball team fell in a close contest Wednesday against ninth-ranked Div. I Spartanburg Methodist, 68-62.

Three Buccaneers were in double figures, including Josh McClain with 12 points. Preston Earle and Anthony Hilliard both added 10 points for CVCC (6-2).

Dajohn Rowland scored a game-high 14 points for Spartanburg Methodist (10-0), while Ronell Crocket added 12 points.

Horford leads Hawks to 94-91 win over Bobcats

After an atrocious 1-for-10 night at the free throw line last week, Al Horford decided to spend extra time working on his foul shots.

"That's one of the things I always work on, and I got away from it a little bit," he said. "I think it showed when I went in that little slump."

His recent effort seems to have paid off.

Tigers, Bears tangle in early season tri-match

The Fred T. Foard and Bunker Hill high school wrestling teams collided Tuesday in an early season tri-match held by the Tigers.

The match also included SouthLake Christian Academy, of Huntersville.

4 county soccer players chosen All-State by NCSCA

Four Catawba County soccer players were chosen by the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association (NCSCA) as 2012 All-State team members.

Among those athletes chosen include Newton-Conover's Chandler Johnson, St. Stephens' Andrew Barton and Hickory's Carlos Sevilla and Marcos Vargas.

Bucs roll to their sixth win, oust Belmont Abbey

The CVCC men's basketball team pulled out to a 30-point lead by halftime en route to a 87-57 victory against the Belmont Abbey JV on Monday, 87-57.

Rashawn Edwards led the Bucs (6-1) with 15 points, while Josh McClain and Jalen Cannady added 14 points each in a balanced scoring effort for CVCC.
