Red Devils hosting Jamboree next two Saturdays

The Newton-Conover High School girls and boys basketball teams will be hosting two “Battle of the Border” Preseason Jamborees the next two Saturdays.

The Red Devils’ boys varsity and junior varsity squads will compete in games this Saturday against five teams, including North Lincoln, Hough, Legacy Charter, Statesville and Emmanuel Prep.

Red Devils soccer team ready for Lincolnton

The Newton-Conover soccer team enters familiar territory on Wednesday.

The Red Devils (14-6-1) travel to Lincolnton today for a third round match up in the 2A state soccer playoffs.

The Wolves (17-4-1) eliminated Newton-Conover from the playoffs last season.

Bobcats lose starting G Henderson for 2-4 weeks

CHARLOTTE — The Bobcats announced starting guard Gerald Henderson could miss approximately 2-4 weeks with a sprained left foot.

Bucs win preseason game against Montreat JV, 92-62

The Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team defeated the Montreat College junior varsity squad, 92-62, in a preseason match up Tuesday night.

Sophomore Isaiah Cuthbertson scored a game-high 22 points and also grabbed 16 rebounds.

The Bucs opened their preseason last Thursday with a 91-49 victory against Limestone College's JV squad.

Hornets by Renegades ousted in CCFL title game

A dream season for the Catawba County Hornets culminated in a heartbreaking defeat Saturday at Westside/Jaycee Park.

The Hornets (11-2) fell behind early to the Carolina Renegades on their way to a 35-8 loss in the Central Carolinas Football League championship game.

SOCCER PLAYOFFS: Two teams advance, two ousted

Brian See's goal at the 18-minute mark in the second half helped the Newton-Conover soccer team advance to the third round of the playoffs with a 3-2 victory over Smoky Mountain in Sylva on Saturday.

Chandler Johnson led N-C (14-6-1) with two goals, while Franklin Wepner and Eli Cordes tallied an assist each.

CROSS-COUNTRY: County runners solid at states

A pair of Catawba County boys runners finished in the top 10 during Saturday's North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) 2A and 3A Cross-Country meets at Beeson Park in Kernersville.

In the 2A meet, Maiden sophomore Corbin Boyles finished with a time of 16:28.61, just under 14 seconds better than his time in the same event last year of 16:46.59.

Lady Bucs win Region tourney, advance to nationals

The Catawba Valley Community College volleyball team advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championships with a pair of victories on Saturday.

Red Devils blank Huskies to advance in 2AA playoffs

With all of its starters in the line up Friday, the Newton-Conover football team pounded Ashe County.

The Red Devils (9-3) tallied 49 points on offense and held the Huskies scoreless to move on to the second round of the 2AA playoffs.

Blue Devils upset by Bulldogs in 27-24 thriller

The Maiden-Thomasville rivalry added another page to its great high school football rivalry on Friday.

In a game that wasn't decided until the final 34 seconds, a game-tying Ian Oliver field goal was blocked, leading the Bulldogs (5-7) to an upset win over the Blue Devils, 27-24, in the opening round of the 2A state playoffs in Maiden.

The Greater Hickory Kia Classic golf tournament won't be returning for a 13th year on the Champions...
