Bears improve to 3-2, bounce Brevard, 34-6

The Lenoir-Rhyne football team picked up its first road win of the season in a 34-6 triumph over Brevard on Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference play.

L-R senior quarterback Reuben Haynes ran for two touchdowns and the Bears finished with 317 yards on the ground en route to their second-straight victory.

Taylor's TD, defensive stand lifts Maiden past Bandys

Ricky Taylor's five-yard touchdown run with 5:54 left in the third quarter helped Maiden defeat Bandys, 7-0, on the football field Friday.

The Blue Devils (5-3, 3-1) also made a defensive stand with 2:35 left in the game and kept the Trojans (5-3, 2-2) out of the end zone to hold on for the victory.

Red Devils keep pace in the CVAC, topple Bears

Both with identical 4-3 records entering Friday's conference contest, the Newton-Conover and Bunker Hill football teams were heading in different directions. That trend continued.

The Red Devils scored 31-straight points on their way to a 38-14 victory against the Bears.

After winning its third-straight game, Newton-Conover improves to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the Catawba Valley 2A.

NWC 3A/4A ROUND UP: Indians, Bunting get 1st win

The St. Stephens football team picked up its first win of the season on Friday, knocking off North Buncombe in Weaverville, 20-10.

The Indians (1-7) pulled ahead 13-0 in the first quarter behind a 77-yard touchdown pass from Ky'Rawn Whitfield to Nic Kinson.

Saint's Martin Sutton added a four-yard run in the quarter.

Wyatt's goal, 2 assists power Hickory past Foard

Trying to keep pace with conference leader Watauga, the Hickory soccer team made the most of its early opportunities on Thursday.

The Red Tornadoes scored in the first four minutes of the first and second halfs on their way to a 3-1 victory over Fred T. Foard.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Red Devils roll on soccer field

The Newton-Conover soccer team pulled ahead 4-1 by halftime and cruised to a 6-1 conference victory against Bunker Hill on Thursday.

Franklin Wepner led the Red Devils (7-3-1, 5-1-0) with two goals and two assists.

Turner Glynn, Chandler Johnson, Eli Cordes and Brian See also scored goals for Newton-Conover.

Cesar Lara, Glynn and Johnson picked up assists in the victory.

CVCC wins 19th straight, tops Johnson and Wales

The Catawba Valley Community College volleyball team is 19-0 after a four-set road win over Johnson and Wales on Thursday 23-25, 25-22, 25-13 and 25-14.

The Lady Bucs (19-0) dropped the first set in the contest, but rallied back to win three-straight sets and take the match.

Bandys beats Bears on the tennis court

The Bandys tennis team picked up a 8-1 conference victory on Wednesday against Bunker Hill in Catawba.

The Lady Trojans improve to 13-2 overall and 11-2 in the CVAC, while Bunker Hill falls to 6-13 overall and 5-8 in the Catawba Valley 2A.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Indians topple Cougars, 4-2

The St. Stephens soccer team picked up a 4-2 road conference soccer victory against Alexander Central on Wednesday.

The Indians (9-5-2, 4-1-2) received goals from Tommy Vo, Luke Bruce, Osvaldo Cruz and Ben Highland.

Four Saint soccer players also had assists, including Ivan Aguilera-Zavala, Andrew Bare, Andrew Barton, Vo and Bruce.
