Panthers topped by Titans, 30-3

November 14, 2011

The Carolina Panthers of 2011 looked like the Panthers that struggled a year ago on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.

Three points of offense are all the Panthers could muster against a tough and physical Titans defense. Tennessee also made Carolina pay on a few big plays early, allowing them to get ahead and dominate in a 30-3 victory in Charlotte.

"I didn't see a very good football game, truthfully, in every facet of the game" said Panthers coach Ron Rivera.

Many Panthers were frustrated with the end result.

Appalachian State routs Western Carolina, 46-14

November 14, 2011

BOONE — Drew Stewart kicked a school-record six field goals and Appalachian State routed Western Carolina 46-14 on Saturday.

Stewart scored the Mountaineers' (7-3, 5-2 Southern Conference) first 12 points on field goals of 44, 32, 29 and 21 yards. Stewart added field goals of 27 and 24 yards to break Jay Milson's record of four set against Furman in 1991.

Barrow, Toscano share Bandys QB load

November 13, 2011

The Bandys football team's quarterback situation can be described in one word — teamwork.

Sharing responsibilities under center, the duo of senior David Barrow and junior Anthony Toscano has led the Trojans to a strong, comeback season.

Bandys finished with a 3-8 record a season ago and missed the playoffs, but the efforts of Barrow, Toscano and a strong senior class carried the Trojans to the playoffs for the first time since 2009.

However, the Trojans had to conquer adversity to reach the postseason.

Bucs nearly score 100 in victory

November 13, 2011

The CVCC women’s basketball team put on an impressive display Thursday against Milligan College at the Multi-Purpose Complex.

The Lady Bucs nearly broke the 100-point mark in a dominating 91-58 victory over the Lady Buffs.

Page Moore led CVCC with 18 points, while Olivia Sabo, Nicole Gentry and Brianna Mitchell added 14 points.

CVCC trailed early in the Thursday’s game because of a hot three-point shooting start by Milligan. The Lady Buffs hit four early treys, including two by Brooke White, to take a 19-12 advantage in the contest.

Bandys senior guard Story inks with L-R Bears

November 10, 2011

Beaming from ear to ear, Bandys’ Jesse Story made her college decision official on Wednesday.

The senior basketball player signed to play for Lenoir-Rhyne University starting next fall.

“I’m excited,” Story said of her basketball future at L-R. “I really like the coaches and team. When I got to interact with them, I felt accepted from the beginning. A lot of times when you go places, it felt awkward. I also wanted to be close to home.”

Story visited her parents’ alma mater, Appalachian State, as well as Mars Hill and Davidson before making her decision final in the spring.

Lail's three lifts Bucs over Cobras

November 9, 2011

Trailing by nine points at the midway point of the second half, the Catawba Valley Community College basketball team kicked it into another gear.

The Bucs scored 48 points in the second half, most of which came late in the game, leading CVCC to a 78-76 come-from-behind victory at home against Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute (CCCTI).

CVCC coach Bryan Garmroth said the change started when his team trailed 35-30 at the half.

Red Devils succeed in many sports

November 8, 2011

With a victory Saturday against Northeastern on the volleyball court, Newton-Conover won its eighth state championship.

The volleyball crown, the school’s first in history, continued an amazing run of state titles at N-C since the year 2000.

During that span, the Red Devils are the state’s best in five different sports.

“I just think the excitement surrounding a state championship and kids wanting to be a part of it is infectious,” said N-C athletic director Ericia Turner. “The community just surrounds the kids. It’s a pride thing for them.”

Trojans rally behind Young, strong defense

November 6, 2011

It was a tale of two halfs for Bandys on Friday night in its first round playoff match-up against Ashe County.

After trailing 14-12 at halftime, the Trojans rallied behind four second half touchdowns by running back Dominique Young, and the defense forced four turnovers, leading Bandys to the 40-14 victory in Catawba.

The Trojans opened the game with a bang. After returning the opening kickoff to their own 44-yard line, quarterback David Barrow tossed a 56-yard pass to Hunter Lackey to make it a 6-0 game. The extra point was blocked.
