She's on fire: Jesse Story hits seven treys, Trojans advance to championship game

February 17, 2011

Thursday's game was a tale of two halfs and a tale of two Storys.

Bandys' Jesse Story connected on seven 3-pointers and her sister, Madi, came up with some crucial plays on defense in the second half, as the Lady Trojans earned a CVAC semifinal win against East Burke on Thursday.

Five of Jesse's 3-pointers came in the opening half of play.

"Jesse has been shooting the ball well," said Bandys coach Beth Queen. "She wanted the ball and she was ready for it. As well as she is shooting it now, the more we can get the ball in her hands, the better off we will be as a team."

Lights out: Lady Red Devils score 38 straight points, advance to second straight CVAC title game

February 16, 2011

For the second time in three games, the Lady Red Devils and Lady Warriors faced off.

Unfortunately for West Caldwell, it was the same result.

Newton-Conover (21-2) scored 38 straight points on their way to a dominant Catawba Valley Athletic Conference semifinal win against West Caldwell.

The Lady Red Devils made up for a lack on intensity that coach Jonathan Tharpe saw in their opening round victory against Bunker Hill on Monday.

He initially became active in the sport by spending time with friends who were interested in jet skis as well.

"I started working on jet skis," Correll said. "I met up with some guys who were doing the same thing I was doing at the time. They also did their own maintenance work. I got involved with them a little bit and started learning things from them."

February 14, 2011

Monday was a day all about love. For the Lady Red Devils and Lady Bears, it was all about survival.

Newton-Conover's Shynese Whitener scored 19 points and the Lady Red Devils got key bench play down the stretch as they picked up a CVAC tournament first round win against Bunker Hill.

Despite the victory, N-C coach Jonathan Tharpe was disappointed in his team's energy for most of the game.

February 11, 2011

Two in a row.

Newton-Conover fought off an early game slump to blow open a big lead against West Caldwell on their way to their 13th conference win.

The victory gives the Lady Red Devils their second consecutive CVAC championship on Senior night.

"This is a huge accomplishment for this team," said N-C head coach Jonathan Tharpe. "These seniors have spent three years with me working on trying to be the best basketball players and teammates that they can. For us to win back-to-back conference championships is very special."

Home advantage: Remaining wrestling teams stay in area for Sectional, Regional playoff rounds

February 9, 2011

And then there were three.

After Tuesday’s State Team Dual tournament opening rounds, only three area teams remain in the hunt for a state championship.

St. Stephens and Fred T. Foard survived in the 3A, while Newton-Conover was the lone team in 2A to make it through.

The added benefit for these teams is that they face different circumstances than their opening contests. Newton-Conover and Fred T. Foard both host matches on Thursday.

St. Stephens will travel, but it will be a much shorter distance, as they head to Foard for their third and fourth round competition.
