After leading Fred T. Foard to a 3A state wrestling title, the Tigersâ coach is being rewarded for his efforts.
Mike Carey, coach of the Foard wrestling program since 2008, was named the North Carolina 3A wrestling coach of the year by Mat News. The announcement came earlier this week.
âItâs the âcherry on topâ to our good season,â Carey said of the honor. âThis is a product of all the work the boys did. It was their work. This is another way to honor them.â
August 30th
Despite falling behind 2-1 in its match against Bandys on Thursday, Newton-Conover never relinquished hope.
The Lady Red Devils (5-1, 2-0) won the final two games against the Lady Trojans (1-1, 1-1) to win the CVAC match in dramatic fashion, 25-21, 19-25, 9-25, 25-18, 15-13.
âBandys played hard,â said Newton-Conover coach Linda Richards. âThey are a good team. We are lucky to come out of here with a win.â
After losing the first game to Newton-Conover, Bandys picked up two impressive wins in the second and third games.
August 27th
It was deja vu all over again for Bunker Hill.
For the second straight year, the Bears traveled down Springs Road and defeated St. Stephens, 28-14.
Leading the way for the Bears was their rushing attack, which racked up 212 yards on the ground, including 148 yards from running back Reggie Davis and 64 yards from Justin Lynch.
"We are going to run the football," said Bears coach Travis Connor. "We're going to do that, but we've got to throw the ball better. We've got to pick our spots to throw it better. When you have two backs like Reggie and Justin, you've got to feed them."
After a lop-sided, 55-13 loss to East Lincoln last week, Newton-Conover brought a different Red Devil team to Hickory High School on Friday night.
"Did this look like the team you saw last week?" Bazzle answered a question with the same question after the contest.
Piling up more than 400 yards of offense and four touchdowns in the second half against Hickory, an enthusiastic Red Devil team delivered a resounding answer: No.
The Trojans brought their shields to this one.
The Bandys Trojans defense controlled the field in their dominating victory over the Fred T. Foard Tigers on Friday, setting the tone of the game from the start and throwing in big plays to position their offense for the win.
The Trojans defeated the Tigers 27-7, marking the first lost for new Foard head coach Jason Phelps and moving Bandys to 2-0 on the season.
August 26th
In a match-up of two rookie quarterbacks likely to start for their respective teams this season, Cincinnatiâs Andy Dalton stole the show.
Dalton completed 11-of-17 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown, leading the Bengals to their first victory of the preseason.
Panthersâ rookie Cam Newton played through the third quarter of Thursdayâs game, completing 6-of-19 passes for 75 yards. He also rushed for a team-high 49 yards on four carries.
Newton opened the gameâs scoring at the 6:27 mark in the first quarter with a 16-yard run. The score gave the Panthers a 7-0 lead.
After dropping a season-opener against Forbush, the Fred T. Foard volleyball team is on a roll.
The Lady Tigers (4-1, 1-0) won their fourth straight volleyball match Thursday with a 25-14, 25-16, 25-13 win against the visiting Lincolnton Lady Wolves.
âThis was the best weâve played this season,â said Foard coach Alison Yount. âThey played like a real volleyball team. I was proud of them. They did a really great job.â
Leading the way for the Lady Tigers were Olivia Purvis and Madison Hayes, who had seven kills each.
August 25th
In a match up of heavyweights in 2A soccer, Newton-Conover came up on the âshort end of the stick.â
The Red Devils (3-1-1) gave up two early goals to Shelby (3-0-0) in the first half and surrendered three goals in the second half during a four-minute span on their way to a 6-1 loss.
âI think early in the season, we needed this,â said N-C coach Angelo Palozzi. âWe had a good week last week beating AC Reynolds, Hickory and tying East Lincoln. I think this shows us where we are now and where we need to be.â

STATESVILLE, N.C. (AP) â NASCAR points leader Kyle Busch lost his driver's license for 45 days on Tuesday for driving 128 mph on a road close to a day-care center and church in a nearly $400,000 car. His lawyer said his client was not treated "like any other citizen."
Busch, who doesn't need a license to compete in NASCAR, also was fined $1,000, sentenced to 30 hours of community service and put on one year of unsupervised probation. He pleaded guilty to speeding and no contest to reckless and careless driving in North Carolina District Court in Iredell County.
August 23rd
The St. Stephens volleyball team won its third match of the season, but Maiden didnât make it easy on them.
After winning the first two games 25-14 and 25-19, the Lady Indians (3-0) fought tooth-and-nail with Maiden (0-1) for the third and deciding game.
St. Stephens persevered past the Blue Devils to win the game and match, 29-27.
âThe last game was a nail-biter,â said Lady Indians coach Denise Mullins. âI am really proud. All the girls really showed their ability. They showed how hard they came to play.â
