GHC ready despite shorter time to prepare

Despite having seven months to prepare for another tournament, Rock Barn Golf & Spa is ready to host the 2011 Greater Hickory Classic presented by Kia Motors next week.

Pete Fisch, tournament manager for the Greater Hickory Classic, said the moving of the tournament date put the course in a time disadvantage.

Poole, Hoyle, Jordan guide Post 48 in win

The Hickory American Legion baseball team opened up the home portion of its 2011 season in fashion.

Post 48 (2-0) scored early, adding one run in the first and four runs in the second, on its way to a 11-2 win over Rutherford County Post 423 Wednesday.

Leading the way offensively was Stephan Jordan, who had three RBIs. Jacob Hoyle added two RBIs.

Pitcher Tyler Poole also played a great game, allowing seven hits, two runs, three walks and struck out six batters.

Bears sweep doubleheader with N-C

In a back-and-forth battle in doubleheader Junior Legion baseball, Bunker Hill got the best of Newton-Conover.

The Bears scored six runs in the final two innings of game one to earn a 9-5 victory.

They swept the doubleheader with two clutch RBIs in the bottom of the fifth inning by Nathan Gantt to win game two.

The Red Devils and Bears tied after the first inning with both squads scoring two runs each in the first frame.
