April 18th
Three singles and six doubles players from county teams are guaranteed a spot at Regionals after Mondayâs opening round of the CVAC tournament.
Among the county teams to have players advancing to Regionals were Maiden and Newton-Conover.
The Red Devils, who are beginning their quest for a second straight state championship in 2A, had John Reid qualify individually for the second year in a row.
Hang Lak Choi and Ryan Lampe, as well as Austin Adams and John Tate, qualified for regions in doubles.

CHAPEL HILL â North Carolina's Harrison Barnes will return for his sophomore season instead of declaring for the NBA draft.
Barnes was the Atlantic Coast Conference rookie of the year, averaging nearly 16 points. The 6-foot-8 forward was widely regarded as the nation's top freshman entering the season and helped the Tar Heels win 29 games and the ACC regular-season championship and get within a game of the Final Four.
The Tar Heels will return all five starters and their top seven scorers from last season, making them a favorite to enter the year ranked No. 1.
April 16th
It was a âDavid versus Goliathâ match-up when Bunker Hill faced Newton-Conover in baseball Friday.
The Bears entered the game a staggering 16-0 and 10-0 in CVAC games.
The Red Devils sported a 1-15 record. However, that didnât stop Newton-Conover from playing their hearts out.
Red Devil pitcher Todd Church had his finest game of the season, striking out nine batters, but the Bears were just too much.
Bunker Hill scored six runs off of Church and pitcher Jacob Shepard struck out 11 batters, allowed one walk and three hits to give the Bears their 17th consecutive victory.
April 14th
Former Maiden and Bunker Hill football coach Tom Brown will enter his fourth hall of fame on Saturday, when he is inducted into the North Carolina High School Athletic Associaton (NCHSAA) Hall of Fame.
Brown, who is considered by many as one of the greatest high school coaches in North Carolinaâs history, adds the NCHSAA Hall of Fame honor to his inductions into the Lenoir-Rhyne, Catawba County Sports and North Carolina Athletic Directorâs Association Halls of Fame.
April 13th
Five former coaches and athletes were announced as members of the 2011 Catawba County Sports Hall of Fame on Wednesday.
Among the names in this yearâs class are NASCAR champion Dale Jarrett, youth sports coach William âSkipâ Beatty, slow-pitch softball sponsor Richard Howard and Hickory High School stand outs Cathy Burgess Hitchcock and Charles Allen âAlâ Young.
The quintet will be a part of the 10th class of the hall of fame.
April 12th
Taylor Sigmon was in a bit of a slump at the plate entering Tuesdayâs softball game against Newton-Conover.
When the game was over, she left little doubt that she had found her swing.
The junior drove in four RBIs and blasted four hits, including three doubles and a home run, lifting the Lady Trojans to their eighth conference victory.
April 11th

Itâs one simple word that is changing the complexion of the Maiden womenâs soccer program.
Last season, Maiden held a 5-12-2 overall record, were 2-12-1 in the Catawba Valley Athletic Conference and scored 18 goals for the entire season.
So far this season, the team nearly doubled its total victories from a year ago with a 9-5-1 record. They hold a 5-2-1 conference mark and have scored 26 goals.
Third-year coach Dennis Ly said the change is due to a couple of reasons.
April 8th
Rivals St. Stephens and Fred T. Foard met for the second time on the soccer field this season Friday. They didnât disappoint.
The Lady Indians scored five minutes into the game, and held off an aggressive second half by the Lady Tigers to remain undefeated in Northwestern Conference play.
âIt is the same old Foard-St. Stephens game,â said Lady Indians coach Chuck Davis. âIt is always a one-goal game. I donât care if it is raining, dry, cold or hot. They just get so pumped up to play against us.â
April 7th
Newton-Conover scored six minutes into Thursdayâs game and never looked back.
The Lady Red Devils earned their third victory of the season, knocking off a tough Maiden team at home.
The win comes after Newton-Conover (3-13-0, 3-5-0) started the season with a 1-10 record.
âComing into this game, our mindset was that every game counts,â said N-C coach Robert Froyd. âEven if we donât go into the postseason, every game for us counts. It is a matter of pride, making sure we have respect for ourselves and showing each other what could have been.â
April 6th
The Hickory Crawdads kick off the 2011 campaign tonight against the Asheville Tourists.
After the Texas Rangers made the World Series last season, the expectations are high for their minor league affiliate in Hickory.
