Gantt scores 22 in Blue Devil win

January 7, 2011

The Blue Devils won their second game in the Catawba Valley 2A with a strong performance by Jason Gantt.

Gantt scored a game-high 22 points in the Maiden victory, including four 3-point baskets.

“The kids did a good job of never wanting to sleep,” said Maiden coach Doug Miller. “We stayed at it and didn’t have too bad of a lull. There have been times where we go to sleep, wake up five minutes later and have lost an 8-point lead. I felt like we stayed steady and consistent.”

The Bandys girls basketball team outscored Maiden 43-21 in the second half to pull away for a Catawba Valley 2A victory.

Leading the way were Taylor Sigmon and Jesse Story. Story scored a game-high 24 points, while Sigmon scored 15 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.

The game was moved from its regular start time to 4 p.m. due to impending weather. Bandys coach Beth Queen felt the change in game time seemed to affect some of the players on the court.

Hickory sweeps team awards

January 6, 2011

At the first gathering of all area swim teams, Hickory swept the board.

The Tornadoes won the boys and girls team awards and the combined team award.

"This is the first meet we had with the whole county since I've been coaching," said Hickory head coach Cathy Hitchcock. "We swim them at dual meets, but not everyone together. So it was kind of a neat thing to see all levels together."

It was an emotional night for the Maiden swim team. They were competing for the first time without teammate Kelsey Ann Hunt, who passed away on Christmas day.

Bandys girls' basketball is a family affair

January 3, 2011

At Bandys, the girls' basketball team is a family affair.

From the head coach to the assistant coach to the junior varsity coach and many of the players, almost every part of the team involves family. It started when head coach Beth Queen began coaching AAU basketball with her players when they were age 9-10.

"I guess there is more comfort because we have coached them from such a young age," Queen said. "We know them really well, and we know what to expect. Sometimes we know what to expect before the kid does it on the court."

Not only was their record impressive, but so were the milestones of two individuals on the team.
