Lady Red Devils tally 23 steals in victory

December 27, 2011

Newton-Conover's 2010 Catawba Valley Classic title defense started where it ended last season — with a victory over Fred T. Foard.

The Lady Red Devils used strong defense to defeat the Lady Tigers, 66-34, for the first time since their championship meeting at the Classic one year ago.

“I thought in the first half, we were still in our Christmas mode,” said N-C coach Ike Williams. “I think we overindulged in food and gifts. We talked about it at halftime and we stepped it up. I'm happy for a win.”

Smith, Kalil selected to Pro Bowl, but not Newton

December 27, 2011

CHARLOTTE — Panthers center Ryan Kalil and receiver Steve Smith were selected to the NFC Pro Bowl team Tuesday night, but sensational rookie quarterback Cam Newton wasn't.

Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Eli Manning were the three NFC quarterbacks who made the Pro Bowl ahead of Newton.

Manning threw for 26 touchdowns and ran for one, while Newton combined for 34 touchdowns — 20 passing and 14 rushing. Newton was selected as a first alternate and will play in the game if any of the three quarterbacks ahead of him make it to the Super Bowl.

Bobcats score win over Bucks

December 27, 2011

CHARLOTTE — Charlotte Bobcats coach Paul Silas floated the idea last week of playing point guards D.J. Augustin and Kemba Walker at the same time once they got comfortable with each other, even though it might put his team at a big size disadvantage.

Apparently they're comfortable.

When crunch time arrived Monday night both were on the floor. Augustin scored 19 points, Walker added 13, including two free throws with 9.9 seconds remaining, as the Bobcats erased a 14-point second half deficit to beat the Milwaukee Bucks 96-95 in their season opener.

Maiden's Hipps honored at Panthers game

December 26, 2011

Maiden senior Dustin Hipps was honored Saturday as a Carolina Panthers Community Captain during the Panthers' final home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Hipps — who plays football, baseball and basketball at Maiden — received the honor for work in sports, academics and community service.

"It was an exciting and very humbling experience," Hipps said of being honored on the field. "It definitely ranks near the top of my experiences in life. It was pretty cool to be out on the field with those players."

He first learned about the honor in an announcement he received in the mail.

Newton leads Panthers to 48-16 rout of Bucs

December 26, 2011

CHARLOTTE — Cam Newton had no shortage of doubters coming into the NFL.

They're much harder to find now.

The No. 1 pick in the NFL draft added to his remarkable season by breaking Peyton Manning's rookie record for yards passing and setting a franchise mark with a 91-yard touchdown toss to Brandon LaFell as the Carolina Panthers handed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers their ninth straight defeat, 48-16 on Saturday.

December 22, 2011

Christmas tournament season kicked off a little early in Claremont on Thursday during the first-ever “Hoopin’ at the Hill” junior varsity basketball tournament held at Bunker Hill High School.

In girls competition, it was the Lady Bears advancing to Friday’s title game with a 35-29 victory against North Wilkes.

The Lady Bears face West Wilkes, who won a 55-50 overtime thrilller with North Lincoln, in the final.

Maturing Newton looks to set record versus Bucs

December 22, 2011

CHARLOTTE — The last time Cam Newton faced the Buccaneers he ran his way into the NFL record books.

This time he'll use his arm to do the same.

The Panthers sensational rookie quarterback needs 18 yards passing Saturday against Tampa Bay to break Peyton Manning's rookie single-season record of 3,739 yards.

But Newton said that record is not as important as closing the season with two wins and helping the Panthers (5-9) carry a load of momentum into next season when their games once again starting counting for something.
