Trailing by nine points at the midway point of the second half, the Catawba Valley Community College basketball team kicked it into another gear.
The Bucs scored 48 points in the second half, most of which came late in the game, leading CVCC to a 78-76 come-from-behind victory at home against Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute (CCCTI).
CVCC coach Bryan Garmroth said the change started when his team trailed 35-30 at the half.
With a victory Saturday against Northeastern on the volleyball court, Newton-Conover won its eighth state championship.
The volleyball crown, the schoolâ€™s first in history, continued an amazing run of state titles at N-C since the year 2000.
During that span, the Red Devils are the stateâ€™s best in five different sports.
â€śI just think the excitement surrounding a state championship and kids wanting to be a part of it is infectious,â€ť said N-C athletic director Ericia Turner. â€śThe community just surrounds the kids. Itâ€™s a pride thing for them.â€ť
