Hickory and Lakewood were locked in a battle Wednesday during the first two innings of the playoff opener at L.P. Frans Stadium. Hickory starter Neil Ramirez held the Northern Division’s top team scoreless through two innings, but things quickly unraveled in the third.

The Newton-Conover Red Devils earned their first soccer win of the season Wednesday. The Red Devils won 1-0 at Maiden. Chandler Johnson scored the match's lone goal in the 26th minute, and Eli Cordes earned the assist.
Newton-Conover is 1-0 against the Catawba Valley 2A and 1-7 overall. Maiden dropped to 1-5 overall on 0-1 in conference play.
