Conference play begins this week in the Catawba Valley 2-A, with two of the leagues’ biggest rivals set to square off Friday. Newton-Conover (4-0) travels to Maiden (3-1), and both teams look to start league play on stable ground.
“It starts this week for everybody, so if you win, you’re tied for first place, which is how you want to start,” Red Devils head coach Nick Bazzle said. “We’re getting one of the big guns first this year.”
But fans of both teams know this matchup is more than just the kickoff of this year’s conference schedule; it’s also about bragging rights.
The first game Thursday at Bandys between the Trojans and the Newton-Conover Red Devils turned into a battle of will. The teams were tied at 25 and neither budged until the Red Devils scored three straight points — on a kill from Isabella Zaliagiris and back-to-back Bandys errors — to earn the 30-28 win.
The Red Devils rode that momentum winning the next two games 25-15 and 25-22 to get the 3-0 sweep at Bandys, and they took control of the Catawba Valley 2-A conference.
