The Fred T. Foard Tigers found themselves in a familiar position Wednesday — needing a goal to win a match. They got that crucial goal from Jason Smith in the closing minutes of a conference match at home against the Watauga Pioneers.
The game-winning goal was Smith’s second of the night and gave the Tigers a 2-1 victory at home. Smith scored the Tigers’ first goal of the night in the 22nd minute on a shot seven yards outside the penalty box.
Draughn rode the momentum of two first-half goals in a 2-1 win Wednesday over Newton-Conover. Toua Xiong scored in the 9th minute on a mishandled ball in the box, and Jacob Crisp added an insurance goal in the 27th minute on a crossing pass from Aaron Yang.
Newton-Conover got on the board in the second half with a goal by Christian Marinero off a rebounded shot from Franklin Wepner. The Red Devils had an 8-6 shot advantage in the loss, and a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks.
The Red Devils are now 3-2 against the Catawba Valley 2-A, and the Wildcats improved to 4-1.
