Lakewood wins pivotal Game 3

September 11, 2010

The Lakewood BlueClaws scored three runs in the first inning Saturday, and they never looked back. The BlueClaws defeated the Hickory Crawdads 6-0 in the third game of the Divisional Round of the South Atlantic League playoffs.

The BlueClaws won the series 2-1.

Lakewood catcher Sebastian Valle dealt the first blow with a two run homer in the bottom of the first inning and was followed later by an RBI single from third baseman Jeremy Barnes to make it 3-0.

Lakewood added a run in the fourth, before two unearned runs in the 8th
came in to account for the 6-0 final.

Bunker Gets Win No. 4

September 11, 2010

It’s been 11 years since Bunker Hill started a regular season 4-0. The Bears broke that streak Friday against the Fred T. Foard Tigers doing what they do best — running the ball and eating the clock. The Bears defeated the Tigers 34-13 at Foard and improved to 4-0 for the first time since in 12 seasons.

Bunker Hill (4-0) gained 254 yards of total offense, and 164 of those yards came from junior running back Reggie Davis, who had 19 carries.

N-C Overcomes Turnovers

September 11, 2010

It seemed like an undefeated Newton-Conover on Friday wanted to give the game to the St. Stephens and deny coach Nick Bazzle a 100th career win. The Red Devils committed four turnovers in the first half — three lost fumbles and an interception, but they rebounded in the second half en route to a 28-14 win at St. Stephens.

“There could have been a little more shine on it,” Bazzle said. “It’s not that big of a deal to me. I have coaches that prepare just as hard as I do. I’m in a football place, and they love football in this community, and you’re supposed to win at Newton-Conover.”
