Hickory Gains Ground

The Hickory Crawdads scored two runs in the first inning, and that made all the difference. Hickory held off Lakewood on Wednesday to defeat the first-place BlueClaws 5-3.
The win moves Hickory within 2-1/2 games of first place with three games remaining in the team’s final homestand of the 2010 season. Hickory and Lakewood play Game 2 at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Hickory starting pitcher Neil Ramirez worked six innings and gave up only one run. He struck out six batters, surrendered three hits, and earned the win.

Blue Devils Survive Close Match At Saint

Maiden needed five games Wednesday at St. Stephens for its second win of the season. The Blue Devils, just as they did last week against Fred T. Foard, needed all five games and won 3-2.
The Blue Devils defeated the Indians 18-25, 25-15, 25-18, 15-25 and 15-11.
Maiden improved to 2-0, and St. Stephens dropped to 2-3.
Mackenzie Garrison led Maiden with 18 kills and 12 blocks in the non-conference win. Melanie Annas had 10 kills and 12 digs, and Go Lo finished with 21 digs.
