Newton-Conover wins rubber match with Hickory

In the epic battle between Newton-Conover and Hickory girls’ basketball teams, round two goes to the Lady Red Devils.

Shynese Whitener scored a game-high 23 points, including four clutch free throws in the final two minutes of Wednesday’s game. The Lady Red Devils advanced to the championship game of the Catawba Valley Classic with a 68-65 win past the Tornadoes.

“This win means a lot,” Whitener said. “It is just a game that we all love playing because it is against Hickory. It felt great to beat them on their court.

Maidens claws past Foard in fourth

Despite trailing Fred T. Foard by 16 points heading into the fourth quarter, the Maiden boys’ basketball team never stopped playing.
After scoring 13, 4, and 12 points in the previous three quarters, the Blue Devils made 15-of-16 free throws in the quarter and scored an incredible 29 points to squeeze past Fred T. Foard, 58-56.

“The kids just never gave up,” said Maiden coach Doug Miller. “They put a lot of pressure on Foard and created a lot of turnovers.”
