Blue Devils Whip Wildcats

November 6, 2010

For the second straight week, Nate Johnson solidified his spot as the Blue Devils’ starting running back.

Johnson led Maiden in rushing for the second-straight game and made the game-changing play in the second half at home against Draughn.

One play after Draughn cut Maiden’s lead to 21-14, Johnson ran left on a sweep. He ran out of room, escaped tackles, reversed field and ran 73 yards up the right side for his third touchdown of the game.

The Blue Devils led 27-14 after the play and won their final game of the regular season 33-14 over the Wildcats.

Prepping For The Postseason

November 5, 2010

The Catawba Valley Buccaneers went swashbuckling through another regular season. Head coach Shannon Hudson and the Buccaneers started the season with a 3-0 loss at the beginning of the season to Cape Fear Community College, but they rallied and won 10 of their next 11 matches en route to a 19-5 overall record.
CVCC ended the season 12-2 in conference play and earned the top seed from the West at this weekend’s Carolinas-Virginia Conference volleyball tournament at Rockingham Community College in Wentworth.

One Race Left

November 5, 2010

Alfredo Dominguez has only one more race to run this season — the state meet. And the junior cross country runner from Newton-Conover wants to finish well despite some pre-race jitters.

“I’m just nervous about it, but I’m actually ready for it,” Dominguez said. “This means a lot. I can’t go in there and mess around. I’m going to try my best, and hopefully everything will pay off.”

Searching for a win, but finding fun

November 2, 2010

Three women’s basketball teams representing the Greater Hickory Metro competed in the state Senior Games during the weekend. They played a combined 11 games Friday and Saturday at East Carolina University’s student activity center, and they combined for zero wins.

The team wants that to change next year.

“We’re hoping some time in the future, whether it is next year or the next year, ultimately we want to win a game,” said Jesse McCarther, head coach of the three teams from the Unifour Red Foxes.

Red Devils Ride Momentum Into Playoffs

November 2, 2010

Newton-Conover started the season with a loss to third-ranked Shelby. That loss turned into seven straight losses and eventually into losing its first 11 of 14. But that losing turned into winning late in the 2010 season and eventually led to a playoff berth in the 2-A West.

The Red Devils finished fifth in the Catawba Valley 2-A Athletic Conference with a 7-6-1 conference record, and they captured the conference’s last playoff spot.
