Hickory soccer coach Brian Jillings had a message to his team Wednesday night before taking the field at home against Charlotte Catholic in the 3-A West region final. He wanted his team to make it memorable.
â€śNow we have to do it all over again,â€ť he said.
The Red Tornadoes scored two goals in the first half and hung on the rest of the match to defeat Charlotte Catholic 2-1. Hickory plays at 1 p.m. Saturday at N.C. State against the winner of the 3-A East final between Jacksonville and Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons.
The Fred T. Foard Tigers wrestling team made a quick turn around in the past three seasons. The Tigers went from a struggling team before coach Mike Carey got there in 2008 to sharing the 2009-10 Northwestern 3-A/4-A conference title with St. Stephens and Alexander Central in his second season as coach.
â€śI think we have a really good chance to be one of the state contenders,â€ť senior Caleb McRorie said. â€śWe started from nothing, and now we are one of the top teams in the state. Hopefully, we can keep going up.â€ť
