On his first two rushing attempts of the game, Jervasse Herrin scored two touchdowns. The first came on a 63-yard run in the second quarter, and the second was five minutes later on a 12-yard run. That pair of touchdowns provided the spark the Red Devils needed to pull away from East Burke and pull out a 52-14 win at home.
“I just went out and played hard,” Herrin said with a smile after the game. “We just came out, blocked hard and executed.”
After mounting a quick 21-0 lead, St. Stephens was in danger of allowing Fred T. Foard back into the annual cross-county clash between the 3A rivals.
In a deep deficit, the Tigers scored two quick touchdowns and were staging a comeback going into halftime.
Then Indian quarterback Tanner Miller took over.
With 1 minute 30 seconds left in the first half, the Indians got the ball on their own 4-yard line after recovering a Foard fumble that killed a threatening Tiger drive.
Miller then rushed six times for 81 yards to lead the Indians into field goal range.
