Dear Santa, “My baby cosin caleb needs a new heart because half of his heart is not thayr. He ben so good. He doesn’t need to have half a heart.”
“I want a Xbox because I never have one before. I want a cote for my family in vitnam beause I don’t want dem to be called. I want my mom and dad to stop fighting each other. Santa you our the best man ever. I was good Santa.”
“A Christmas Carol” has always been one of my favorite holiday tales.
There’s the wicked Ebenezer Scrooge with his miserly ways, the good-hearted Bob Cratchit and, of course, the three ghosts of Christmas who aim to change Scrooge’s life forever.
I first became familiar with the story as a little girl when my brother, sister and I watched “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” hundreds of times each holiday season on a worn-out VHS cassette.
We balked at the cruelty of Scrooge McDuck and cheered when Mickey and Minnie enjoyed a Christmas dinner with Tiny Tim at the movie’s conclusion.
If you see what appears to be a mound of winter clothes running around Catawba County in the next few days, it’s me. I hate cold weather, and this week’s bitterly cold temperatures have left me seeing just how many layers I can add to my body and still maintain the use of my arms.
I don’t remember when I started hating cold weather. I do know, however, that I reach for a sweater just from the mention of temperatures below 70 degrees.
Now for something completely different — well, sort of — I’m back in the sports saddle at The O-N-E, and this past week the duty took me to my first-ever swim meet. The experience was certainly educational and entertaining, so much that I want to make sure Wednesday night’s meet at Lenoir-Rhyne University won’t be my last.
Tis the season of holiday movies — at the cinemas and on television — and stage productions, whether musical, drama or comedy.
I had a near-death experience a few days ago. Well, maybe “near death” is an exaggeration, but it certainly felt like my life flashed before my eyes at the time.
I was driving to Hickory on Interstate 40 for an interview, when suddenly a large SUV traveling immediately to my right merged into my lane. The vehicle came out of nowhere. In a split second, I jerked the wheel of my car to the left, slammed on the car horn and pulled into the left lane to avoid the vehicle barreling toward my car.
Recently some sort of hacker got into one of my old e-mail accounts and enjoyed a field day with my “address book,” my e-mail and, for all I know, any personal information I have given the e-mail service provider.
Darts to a management mistake that could, as a motion by the 25th Judicial District Attorney’s office states, “jeopardize the right of the state to prosecute a defendant” in the death of Zahra Baker.
While prosectors also believed opening police search warrants could “undermine” police investigations in the Baker case, District Attorney Jay Gaither’s office failed to do the work required to keep those files confidential.
