5K Cross Country series races through Yadkin Valley vineyards

Looking for a fun alternative to standard 5K races? Check out the 2013 Vineyard Stomp 5K Series in the wine country of Surry County.

The cross country runs take place in vineyards, traversing the unique terrain of various wineries.Three of the four races are still accepting entrants.

Famed watercolorist to exhibit at arts council

The paintings of Dean Mitchell, an internationally known figurative artist, will be on exhibit at the Burke Arts Council for six weeks from Aug.6 through Sept.13.

The exhibition, titled “Traces of Humanity,” contains more than 30 original works. Among them are watercolors, oils,acrylics, sketches and etchings documenting the artist’s 33-year career.

Burnsville’s town square becomes a haven for arts and crafts during the 57th annual Mount Mitchell Crafts Fair. The annual craft fair is held on the town square in Burnsville on the first Friday and Saturday of August.

Ballet school prepares for fall classes

After the spring production of “Swan Lake” and full summer classes, The Louis Nunnery School of Ballet in downtown Hickory is ready to welcome new students in August. To prepare for new and returning students the school is hosting a special open house event on Saturday, Aug. 3 from 12-3 p.m.

Hunter & Jumper Horse Show returns to Blowing Rock in late July

The second phase of what is believed to be America’s oldest continuous horse show – Hunter/Jumper competition – takes place in Blowing Rock in late July. The 90th Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show, held at the nearby Equestrian Preserve, will feature more than 400 horses in competition July 23-28, and July 31-Aug. 4.
