Reunion Day in Newton is a day to salute soldiers and a day of festivities. Many families travel from afar to come “home” and spend Reunion week in the county they grew up in. In addition to the traditional August get-togethers in Newton, there was another special reunion — a reunion of the highest altitude.
August 9th
Jessica Campbell lives and works in Nashville, Tenn. now, but she was born and raised in Catawba County and still calls the small town of Catawba home.
âI grew up drinking lots of Cheerwine and Sun Drop,â Campbell quipped.
The talented singer/songwriter comes home several times a year, and one of those trips is always to attend Balls Creek Campmeeting.

Shuford Abernethy is going home — sort of — and he’s being a good neighbor about it.
Abernethy, president of Abingdon Senior Housing Services, developed Abingdon Glen Village in Hickory, an active adult town home community.
While Abernethy and his wife were visiting in Boston several years ago, they visited Beacon Hill Village.

Ben Cockman sings and plays guitar and mandolin because he believes that God gave him this talent to glorify Him.
Ben’s three brothers, sister, and his father, sing and play for the same reason.

The pace of life is a bit slower at Herman's Fish Lake â quiet and relaxing, for sure. Occasionally, a rooster will crow, or ducks will quack. Muted conversations among the Saturday anglers drift across the pond.
Fishing space around the lake fills quickly, though â especially when one can fish the entire day for $8.
