Comfortable chairs and a sofa surround a coffee table to form an area for conversation and knitting that lends a warm-hearted ambience to Wildskeins Yarn Co.
Owner Ann Dobbins, 60, works in the shop and graciously welcomes everyone who walks in — new customers as well as old.
The warmth and coziness is a far cry from the hustle and bustle of the newspaper newsroom. where Dobbins worked for almost 10 years — the Catawba Valley Neighbors, a bureau of the Charlotte Observer.

Catawba Science Center's Carpenter Hall is crawling with lice, bedbugs, ticks, leeches and other creatures that eat blood.
While it isn't “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” beware of the beasties that bite at Catawba Science Center. Giant blood suckers are launching an invasion, and Carpenter Hall is crawling with lice, bedbugs, ticks, leeches, fleas and other creatures that eat blood.
Explore the science of what’s eating you in a new, skin-crawling exhibit, “Attack of the Bloodsuckers!” now open at CSC.

Brothers Michael and David French moved to Hickory two years ago from Burbank, Calif., and the heart of of "studio city," where every street corner had a music studio for artists. However, the brothers found a different discovery in Hickory.

The football season is here, and that means a lot of things are happening at football stadiums around the county, region and state.
Friday night lights are on, and the parking lots are full of fans getting ready for the night’s big game. When Saturday comes, fans flock to their favorite colleges for round 2, and by the time the pros hit the field, all the football-loving masses are ready for a Sunday afternoon spent with family and friends enjoying a game among the gridiron greats.
Catawba Science Center (CSC), a nonprofit science and technology museum in Hickory, will be open Labor Day from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
While typically closed to the public on Mondays, Sept. 6 marks the final day to visit Flutter-By Butterfly Habitat, featuring hundreds of live butterflies and moths in an outdoor flower garden.
