Boat accident docks traffic

March 1, 2013

A small boat slipped off its trailer Thursday afternoon, when the driver caught a curb while turning onto Northwest Boulevard from a business. Newton Fire and Police officials and the driver picked up the aluminum boat and placed it on back on the trailer. Traffic was congested for less than 30 minutes on Northwest Boulevard.

Bandys’ Torrence named ‘Student of the Month’

The Sherrills Ford-Terrell Rotary Club has started a program to honor a “Student of the Month.”

Their first recipient of this award was given to Jared Torrence.

Torrence is currently a senior at Bandys High School.  He was nominated for this award by school faculty.

LRU students arrested on drug charges

Two Lenoir-Rhyne University students were arrested on campus for drug related charges Monday, Feb.25.

D e v o n Sutherland, 21, of 743 6th St NE, Hi c k o r y, was arrested across the street from the Fritz-Conrad dormitories at about 11 p.m.

CVS stores robbery

A Lincoln County woman was arrested Monday evening and charged in connection with a pair of pharmacy robberies in Newton and Conover.

The woman’s daughter, 19-year-old Chandra Griffin, who was in the vehicle when her mother was taken into custody, also faces misdemeanor drug charges, authorities say.

NASCAR great Ervin passes

One of NASCAR’s original cast and local radio personality John Carl Ervin, 74, died Friday, Feb.  22, 2013 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Sherrills Ford.

A long-time NASCAR veteran crew chief, Ervin worked with three generations of the Jarrett racing family, Ned Jarrett, Dale Jarrett, and Jason Jarrett.

Raid in Newton busts fake document factory

February 22, 2013

Thursday, Feb. 21, agents and officers from Homeland Security, N.C. DMV License & Theft, Newton Police and Conover Police raided two residences in Newton.

The raid started just before 6:30 p.m. an apartment on 317 South College Ave. in Newton.

Agents arrested five individuals and seized materials related to making fraudulent documents.

Cash Mob comes to downtown Newton

Cash Mob Catawba is organizing it’s second “Cash Mob” event scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 5:30 p.m. in Downtown Newton.

The growing group of Catawba citizens, enthusiastic about supporting local businesses, invites everyone to join the monthly movement by showing up and supporting another locally-owned business.

Opdyke awarded for ‘Darkness to Light’ training taught

Adrienne Opdyke, child advocate with the Children’s Advocacy and Protection Center of Catawba County, has been named one of three “Stewards of Children Stars” in the nation for the month of January.

This award recognizes her for training 158 adults in the “Darkness to Light” program in January. She has trained a total of 1,681 local adults.
