Multiple wrecks in Newton left one woman dead and three others injured Friday.

Voices unheard

August 26, 2011

When the sun sets in the summer, trees chew up light and spit out shadows. It is a phenomenon, for humans, that creates a natural nestling place.

We seek the shade. Naturally. To “survive the heat,” as some say.

On Tuesday, I found myself ambling awkwardly through a gravel parking lot toward a short tree providing enough shade for four strangers. They sat or stood 100 yards from the Salvation Army headquarters in Hickory.

They didn’t look welcoming, but not intimidating either, exchanging laughs and smiles and joking about something or other.

Re-using history

August 26, 2011

The Warlong Glove Building in Conover seamlessly blends the old and new.

Inside, century-old brick and mortar shape around giant, arching windows that replicate glass panes familiar to manufacturing buildings of old.

Upstairs, wood creaks and rolls with the foot’s gait, but reinforced support beams below ensure a steady floor. The building’s new elevator is only 6 inches from where it shuttled passengers in the early 1930s.

Wheels in motion

The roar of school bus engines and the sight of children climbing aboard the "big cheese" marks the start of another school year.

However, as Catawba County Schools sends nearly 250 school buses to serve the county's three school systems, the overseer of school transportation in the county is forced to do more with less.

For the past ten years, Nelson Clark’s life has revolved around Harley Davidson.

He loved to ride, but not just for himself. Every year, Clark rode in charity events and fundraisers, including an annual even for kids at Conover School.

“He did the Christmas toy run every winter and was always involved in charities,” said Ginger Mitchell, Clark’s sister.

On Tuesday, Clark was killed in a traffic accident doing the thing he loved most – riding his Harley.

Clark, of Newton, was killed after his motorcycle hit a car that failed to stop for a red light.
