The Newton-Conover City Schools Board of Education appointed a brand new member on Monday night.
The Board appointed Bernard Coulter to the vacant seat left by Scott Loudermelt, who resigned on Jan. 24 after serving for 10 years.
The Honorable Clifton H. Smith was appointed by Gov. Pat McCrory to fill the seat of the retiring 25th District Court Judge Suzanne Owsley.
Smith was sworn in by Chief District Court Judge Robert Brady in a ceremony on Friday at the 1924 Courthouse in Newton.
Not even the snow and ice could put out the fire in Newton.
City officials, along with the police and fire department personnel, were in attendance for Fridayâ€™sÂ groundbreaking ceremony for the new fire station headquarters.
Attorney David Learner has filed in Raleigh with the State Board of Elections as a candidate for District Attorney for Burke, Caldwell, and Catawba counties.
Known throughout the local criminal justice system, Learner has been a prosecutor and a trial attorney who has earned a reputation for honesty and integrity.
Both Catawba County and the city of Conover have issued States of Emergency following winter weather in the area.
Katherine "Kitty: Barnes, chair of the Catawba County Board of Commissioners, issued a State of Emergency for Catawba County as of 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
The city of Conover followed suit, declaring a State of Emergency as of 2:22pm on Wednesday.
Newton-Conover City and Catawba County school systems are both closed for Thursday, Feb. 13 in lieu of inclement weather.
Both systems announced their closing around 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday.
Monday was a busy day at the Catawba County Board of Elections office with seven candidates filing for offices.
Of those seven names who filed, all represent the Republican party.
Three of the seven who filed on Monday were a trio of women running for Clerk of Superior Court.
After 34 years in office, Sen. Austin Allran announced Monday that he will not seek re-election in 2014.
Allran, who represents both Catawba and Alexander counties, is the senior member of the State Senate and ranks number-one in seniority among Republicans in both houses of the General Assembly.
On Saturday, March 29, the streets of Conover will be filled with runners helping to give back to their community.
At least this is the hope of State Trooper Kelly Stewart.
Stewart and other officers of Troop F worked together to organize last yearâ€™s Trooper 5K and Fun Run, which has now become an annual event.
Clifton Smith has been appointed by Gov. Pat McCrory to fill Judge L. Suzanne Owsleyâ€™s remaining term in 25th Prosecutorial District.
The appointed of Smith was officially announced on Friday.
Smith has served as the chief assistant district attorney for the past three years and has worked as an assistant district attorney since 2006.
