Students learn weather

Emma Winters, 10, used her Ipad to look up Thursday’s weather in different cities around the world. The coldest temperature she looked up was in Fairbanks, Alaska, where the high was -10 degrees.

“I like the cold weather here,” Winters said. “But I wouldn’t want to be in that extreme temperature up there.”

Don’t let furry friends freeze in frigid temps

The average core temperature of cats and dogs is between 100 and 100.5 degrees fahrenheit.

Severe hypothermia in pets occurs when their core temperature reaches 82 degrees or below.

At outside temperatures of 20 degrees or below, hypothermia can set in after as few as 30 minutes.

Wreck halts traffic

Jose Gonzalez, 43, was traveling northbound on Northwest Boulevard in Newton on Tuesday in the outside lane when he attempted to make a left turn into the Bi-Lo shopping center, according to Newton Police. Gonzalez, driving a 1989 Dodge van, did not see Shana Collins, 24, driving a 2003 Saturn in the lane beside him to the left.

Demolition underway at former Newton mill

The brick building along North Main Ave. that once housed part of the Carolina Mills Textile Manufacturer has recently seen some alterations.

The building is undergoing some demolition – reducing the two-story mill from approximately 80,000 square feet down to 10,000 square feet.

Walking from the wreckage

Cody Good, 17, ran outside when he saw a single-engine plane crash across from his home in Long View on Tuesday. His instincts told him that there were people inside who needed help, so he didn't hesitate to jump into the wreckage.

"I just knew they needed help," Good said. "They were all bloody and it looked bad."

All three school systems in Catawba County have announced delays for Thursday.

Newton-Conover City Schools, Catawba County Schools and Hickory Public Schools have delayed their schedules two hours for Thursday, Jan. 8.

Vehicle overturns, spills gas

January 7, 2015

Just before 5 p.m. on Tuesday, a white van overturned on Northwest Boulevard and spilled fuel along the roadway. The incident occurred directly in front of the Bi-Lo shopping center in Newton, where road crews working had already blocked one lane of traffic.

Claremont names new City Manager

Catherine Renbarger is excited to get back to her North Carolina roots by taking the role as Claremont City Manager.

Renbarger grew up in Rocky Mount and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2006.

UPDATE: Four injured in Long View plane crash

January 6, 2015

At approximately 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, emergency personnel responded to a call stating that a plane had crashed on First Avenue Northwest in Long View, according to Hickory Fire Department Fire Education Coordinator Terri Byers.

The single-engine plane took off from Hickory Regional Airport with four people on board — three passengers and a pilot.
