Newton man guilty of 46 sexual offenses

A Newton man was sentenced to no less than 160 years of prison time for multiple sexual offenses spanning more than a decade.

Sunset Drive fire torches porch

March 4, 2015

Conover Fire Department responded to a house fire on Sunset Drive just after 11 a.m. on Tuesday. The fire started on the front porch of the residence, according to Chief Mark Hinson, and resulted in no injuries.

“It was a small house fire there,” Hinson said. “We had it under control in about 15 minutes.”

Chief: Man was cutting fuel tank at time of blast

Officials said a man was cutting the end of “an old fuel tank” when an explosion blew through the outbuilding he was working in at 3986 N.C. Highway 16 North on Monday afternoon.

The man suffered burns to 80 percent of his body and was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital following the incident. Officials had no update on his condition Tuesday.

The 9th annual Empty Bowls, Full Heart event will be held from 5 - 7 p.m. on Saturday, utilizing the creative talents of students, staff and the community to raise money for local soup kitchens and overall hunger awareness.

‘Loud boom’ shakes Conover

Brenda Trivette was unloading groceries outside her home on Angel Road in Conover when she heard the explosion.

“All I heard was a loud boom and then I felt the ground shake,” Trivette said. “I actually dropped my bag. Then I turned around and all I could see was black smoke coming from behind the trees.”

The Observer News Enterprise’s Sports Editor Cody Dalton received an award during the N.C. Press Association’s Annual Awards Ceremony held Thursday at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dalton earned second place for sports columns in the Daily Division, which includes newspapers with a circulation less than 15,000.

Second suspect in fatal home invasion identified, arrested

A tip lead Catawba County Sheriff’s Office deputies to the second suspect in a fatal home invasion that occurred Monday near Claremont — Brandon Lineberger.

Lineberger, 26,was arrested and charged on Wednesday in connection with the incident where alleged accomplice Vernon Bobby Dixon was shot and killed.

New planning director eager to return to Catawba Co.

"I'm eager to see what things are happening in Newton," said City of Newton's new Planning Director Randy Williams.

On Feb. 25, Williams officially took seat as the city's new Planning Director.

Williams, 53, first got a feel for the job that he's in now in 1991 when he began working with the City of Conover as their Director of Planning and Economic Development.
