Catawba Valley Community College’s Office of Multicultural Affairs invites the community to attend its Black History Month Celebration from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday., Feb. 28 in the CVCC Tarlton Complex (formerly CVCC Multipurpose Complex).
Entertainment begins at 6 p.m.; the program and awards begins at 7 p.m.
February 4th
Joseph Lashaunn Smith, 35, of Lenoir, was convicted of Felony Indecent Liberties with a Child after a three day trial in Catawba County Criminal Superior Court this week.
February 1st
A Newton man was arrested in Lincolnton Wednesday for drug trafficking.
The subject wanted for the armed robbery of the Sun House Gas Station located at 1901 U.S. 70 in Hickory, which occurred on Jan. 21, has been identified as Brandon Torrey Colbert.
Nominations for the Newton-Conover City Schools “Red Blazer” award will be accepted from Feb. 1- March 4.

January 30th
Dr. Ramona Fletcher was recently named English Department Head at Catawba Valley Community College.
During the Wednesday afternoon hours, weather reports indicated a severe weather alert with a tornado watch and wind advisory. The tornado watch stayed in effect until 8 p.m. while the wind advisory was continued through the night until 6 a.m.
January 29th
Newton-Conover High School entered this week with $1,068.93 raised for the “Coaches vs. Cancer” charity program.
After Monday night, the school more than doubled its total and neared its goal of $2,500 raised.
Catawba County Sheriff’s deputies shot an armed woman near Catawba, Tuesday afternoon.
Deputies responded to a 911 call from a residence at 4787 U.S. 70 East a little after 12:30 p.m.
The caller reported that a female family member there was armed and possibly suicidal.

Barry B. Edwards, who has served as Catawba County’s Utilities and Engineering Director since 1995, has been named one of the winners of the 2013 Energy Leadership Awards by the Business Journal of Charlotte.
