Conover race seeks first responders

In 2013, the first NC Trooper’s Footchase 5K kicked off in Conover. Led solely by Race Director and NC Highway Patrol Sgt. Kelly Stewart, 60 participants took off from the starting line that day.

Professor missing since weekend

A Silver Alert for a missing Newton man was called off less than 24 hours after it was issued, even though the man has yet to be located.

69-year-old Gary Marvin Brady, who was originally reported as a Newton resident, was last seen on March 6 in Durham at the North Carolina Central University (NCCU) where he is a math professor, according to family members.

Local author brings attention to artists

They do art for a lot of different reasons but it’s always something that comes from deep within them that they have to express,” said author of “When the Spirit Speaks: self-taught art of the south,” Margret Day Allen.

“When the Spirit Speaks” is a book composed of stories and art from self-taught artists all throughout the south -- from Tennessee to Georgia to Lousianna.

Getting Digi with it

The State Cinema in Newton is getting a digital upgrade this week.
The iconic downtown theater is getting two new digital projectors to enhance the experience of movie-goers.

According to The State Cinema's owner Lisa McCoy, the new equipment has more pixels and delivers better sound than the previous 35mm projectors used by the cinema for many years.

One airlifted after Hwy. 10 wreck

One person was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte and another sent to Catawba Valley Medical Center proceeding a crash at the intersection of Stover Road and N.C. Hwy. 10 on Wednesday at approximately 1 p.m.

Pin Station in the Spotlight

Pin Station was lit up with the familiar faces of children and their families for an afternoon of bowling, billiards and gaming on Sunday. The facility was also lit up for a less familiar reason — “Get Well” the movie was shooting on location at the Newton business.

NC Child Health Report Card

The 2015 Child Health Summit was held yesterday in Raleigh to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the North Carolina Child Health Report Card and 20 years of progress in children's health.

The report card looked at statistics like youth smoking rates, infant death rates, insured children rates, teen pregnancy rates, childhood obesity and child poverty.

Students at North Newton Elementary School don their favorite cartoon character’s costumes on Friday as they march around the gym for a parade. Students spent the week learning about books and the importance of reading to celebrate the birthday of children’s book author Dr. Seuss.
