Child hit by car while waiting on school bus

On Monday morning, an 8-year-old male was struck by a car while waiting to catch the school bus, according to a release from Maiden Police.

At 6:59 a.m., police and emergency personnel responded to a call that a child had been struck by a vehicle in the 500 block of East Main Street in downtown Maiden.

Sheriff: Claremont homeowner shoots, kills intruder

A man was shot and killed after he attempted to break into a home at 7564 River Bend Road just north of Claremont Monday morning, Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid said.

According to Reid, the homeowner heard someone in his basement around 9:25 a.m. The homeowner was on the phone with 911 to advise of a possible break-in when he heard the basement door being kicked in.

Kentucky played host to SEC league door matt Auburn and appropriately blew them out of the gym. Kentucky used a 23-2 run in the first half to break open a 27 point first half lead. They never looked back as Auburn never seriously threatened again. Karl Anthony Towns led Kentucky with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Fire guts Lake Norman home

February 23, 2015

A large fire destroyed a 3,000-square-foot home on Peninsula Lane in the Sherrills Ford area of Catawba County just before 11 a.m. on Friday.

First units on the scene found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure, according to Sherrills Ford – Terrell Fire & Rescue Chief Rick Davis.

Postal truck hits old post office

The marquee in front of the Old Post Office Playhouse in Newton suffered slight damage after a United States postal truck was clipped by a passenger truck on Wednesday afternoon.

The passenger truck, driven by Richard Coleman of Mooresville, was traveling east on E. A Street when he ran a red light, according to police reports. Coleman’s truck clipped the rear of the postal truck.
