Newton-Conover Rotary reads at South Newton

Eleven members of the Newton-Conover Rotary Club participated in a special reading on Friday, March 20 at South Newton Elementary School

The Rotary Club helped the students participate in “Reading Across America,” an initiative by the National Education Association (NEA). This is the 15th year N-C Rotary Club has participated in what is billed as the nation’s largest readying party.

Charges filed in Newton dog bite case

On the afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 22, two brothers – one 10 years old and the other 6 – were “attacked and mauled” by two Rottweiler dogs in the front yard of a home on North Gaither Avenue in Newton, according to Newton Police.

The children were in the care of their mothers boyfriend, Christopher Aaron Amell, 40.

Big Dance Round Up and Look Ahead

Last week we gave you a preview of the tournament and some predictions of teams that we felt could make a run to the Final 4. Well, those predictions were way off and the bracket this writer submitted to his friends and a couple websites sits in about 10 millionth place. All the wise guys were talking about Iowa State and Virginia. Those teams won a combined 1 game.

Maiden Man Arrested For Facebook Threats on Law Enforcement, Probation Absconder

Lincolnton, NC – Local, State and Federal officers arrested a Maiden man at a Lincoln County location after he issued threats against law enforcement on his Facebook page.

Home severely damaged by windy-day fire

A mobile home, located at 1870 Aprils Way in Newton, was severely damaged in a fire on Tuesday. The fire occurred around 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. More than 60 percent of the home’s roof was destroyed in the blaze. The Catawba County Fire Marshal’s Office is currently investigating the fire. No injuries were reported, but Tuesday’s extremely windy conditions reportedly contributed to the fire.
