Fire guts Lake Norman home

February 23, 2015

A large fire destroyed a 3,000-square-foot home on Peninsula Lane in the Sherrills Ford area of Catawba County just before 11 a.m. on Friday.

First units on the scene found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure, according to Sherrills Ford – Terrell Fire & Rescue Chief Rick Davis.

Postal truck hits old post office

February 20, 2015

The marquee in front of the Old Post Office Playhouse in Newton suffered slight damage after a United States postal truck was clipped by a passenger truck on Wednesday afternoon.

The passenger truck, driven by Richard Coleman of Mooresville, was traveling east on E. A Street when he ran a red light, according to police reports. Coleman’s truck clipped the rear of the postal truck.

Former Senator Cass Ballenger passes

Former U.S. Representative Thomas Cass Ballenger, 88, passed away on February 18, 2015 in his hometown of Hickory, NC.

Ballenger represented the 10th Congressional District of North Carolina from 1986-2005. He was also the founder and former Chairman of the Board of Plastic Packaging, Inc., a manufacturing company with plants in Hickory and Forest City, NC.

Conover, Newton make ‘best of’ list

Recently, NerdWallet — a popular personal finance website — published a study ranking the best cities for young families within the state.
Conover, Newton and Hickory were among the ranks.

The study ranked a total of 123 places. The rankings were based on a set of five criteria that contributed to the overall "young family score."
