Back 2 School

Excited squeals, warm embraces and even a few tears accompanied students across Catawba County as they bid farewell to summer and welcomed a brand new school year. The O-N-E visited Startown Elementary, Shuford Elementary and the brand new South Newton Elementary to capture the emotions as students filled the hallways at these schools.

A Buzzing Hobby

A man, dressed from head to toe in protective gear, walks around in a field, spying out his next box to look at. Thousands of little working soldiers buzz all over the place collecting nectar to bring back to their colonies. The man sprays the bees with smoke to calm them down from then removes the top of the box and starts to retrieve the honey combs.

Attorney General moves to dismiss charges against Gaither

Roy Cooper, North Carolina Attorney General, has filed a motion to dismiss sexual harrassment claims that were filed against District Attorney James C. “Jay” Gaither.

Hometown Crown

Jessica Lackey, 25, of Hickory radiated with hometown pride as she wore her crown through the 125th Soldiers Reunion parade. Lackey was crowned Ms. Reunion this year.

Warlick honored at Reunion

Thomas W. Warlick, former colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, was presented with a Certificate of Respect adn Appreciation from the city of Newton at Thursday’s Soldiers Reunion festivities.

Soldiers Reunion events bring crowds to Newton

Thousands braved the heat and flooded the streets of Newton on Thursday for the 125th Soldiers Reunion.

Crowds of all ages enjoyed munching on treats like funnel cakes and cotton candy while enjoying the musical entertainment and visiting booths set up around the square.

Foothills Wellness Clinic at HSCC-Hickory offers low cost vaccines, heartworm tests, and pest solutions for pets. The upcoming clinic dates are Friday, August 22nd, 12 – 4 pm; Friday, September 5th, 12 – 4 pm; Saturday, September 20th, 9 am– 2 pm. Heartworm, flea, and tick prevention are available for purchase during normal business hours.

Patriotic babies, animals and country music

The week-long 125th Soldiers Reunion continues to see a huge turnout as Wednesday welcomed the Soldiers Reunion Baby Parade, Pet Mania and a double-dose of country music, headlined by Confederate Railroad.

Salute to Soldiers

"It's nice to know that, even after all this time and all these years, that people still appreciate us," said Peggy Isaac, of Newton. "It makes you feel good when people thank you, as a veteran. We went into service to protect the community, so that they could have celebrations and activities like Soldiers Reunion.

Cadets at Carolina

Six Fred T. Foard ROTC students got to experience a brand new view of Bank of America Stadium on Sunday.

The cadets presented the colors before the Carolina Panthers took the field to face the Kansas City Chiefs for their second preseason game this year.
