The Fantastic Shakers popular Carolina beach music band will highlight the annual beach music program on Courthouse Square in Newton as part of the 125th annual Soldiers Reunion patriotic festival. The event, free to the public, is set for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 19.
125 years ago, a group of Civil War veterans gathered in Newton to answer a statewide call for recognition of their wartime efforts and to receive the pensions they were owed.
Today, the event known as Soldiers Reunion has grown into an annual celebration of patriotism, bringing people from around the country to the city to participate.

Five weeks and 3,000 investigative man hours after Discovery High School Counselor Maggie Daniels was strangled to death in her Newton apartment, a neighbor has been arrested and accused of committing the crime.
That neighbor is Sharman Odom.
The man accused of murdering Maggie Daniels is in custody.
Sharman Howard Odom was arrested on Saturday afternoon in Winston-Salem while visiting relatives in the area.
The Newton Police Department sent out a release at 12:52 p.m. Saturday saying that an arrest warrant for Odom had been obtained on Friday, Aug. 1.
