Winter weather likely here to stay

Weather experts agree that the temperatures are about to drop, but the presence of ice, sleet and snow is uncertain.

“With the cold front that’s rolling in, we get into a pattern that would a lot of times give us our best chance at winter weather,” said Catawba County Weather’s Joey Mosteller. “That could mean sleet, snow or freezing rain.”

Rep. Setzer tosses in hat for N.C. Speaker

Representative of the 89th House district, Mitchell Setzer will begin his 9th term in the North Carolina House of Representatives at the start of 2015. Though, this term could hold something a little different for Setzer, as he will be vying for the position as North Carolina Speaker of the House.

Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS), is a form of intentional injury to infants and children who suffer violent shaking, with or without impact on a hard surface. About 25 percent of clinically diagnosed infants die and approximately 80 percent of survivors suffer lifelong neurological damage, according to statistics cited by Catawba County's Children's Advocacy and Protection Center.

Pedestrian dead after two-vehicle accident

At approximately 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, a pedestrian walking down Kool Park Road in Hickory was struck by two vehicles, according to NC Highway Patrol.

When Lawrence Evans, of Newton, was only 17, he fibbed his age to enlist in the Army National Guard. After spending three years with the Guard, Evans enlisted with the Navy alongside his three brothers — Earl, Louis and Kenny.

Evans’ job quickly moved from the sea to the air as he worked with a team of pilots to keep an eye out for enemy submarines.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics investigators arrested a Maiden woman Thursday on drug charges following surveillance and a brief vehicle chase, according to a released distributed by the Sheriff’s Office.

According to Chief Bart Travis, Lt. Ray Ball stops more fires than any other member of the Claremont Fire Department — by preventing them.
