Northside Park gets new equipment

Children in Newton will soon have a new spot to play during their summer vacation.

The Newton Parks and Recreation Center started their renovations at Northside Park on Wednesday.

Baby butt gets local photographer banned

Jill White was snapping photos of her toddler, Willa, and her friend Kinzley as they played in the sand at Myrtle Beach on June 28. Willa and Kinzley are close to the same age and have grown up together, as their mothers are best friends. Dressed in matching polka-dot swimsuits, the girls made the perfect models for White, a Hickory photographer.

Maggie Daniels seen at Wal-Mart on June 27

Newton Police released a still shot of a security camera of Maggie Daniels as she is leaving Wal-Mart in Conover on June 27.

According the the Newton PD press release, the investigation into the death of Maggie Daniels is continuing at this time.

Apple expands to Claremont

July 9, 2014

At the Claremont City Council meeting Monday night the city approved an agreement with Apple Inc. to annex 100 acres of land within the city in turn for a new solar farm located at Kelly Blvd in Claremont. The approved agreement was a unanimous decision amongst the council members. The project will cost Apple about $55 million.

100 balloons floated in the kitchen of Annie Hass' Newton home as she celebrated another year of life. A few of them are still lingering around, reminding her of the milestone she has reached.

Hass was born June 27, 1914 and attended Mt. Olive School for much of her childhood. Once Balls Creek was built, Hass attended school there and graduated in 1931.

Maggie Daniels Memorial

Newton-Conover City Schools will be holding a memorial service for the Discovery High School counselor who was killed more than a week ago in her Newton apartment.

Maggie Daniels, 31, of Windsor Apartments in Newton will be honored in a service on Wednesday, July 9. The service will be held at 4 p.m. at Newton-Conover High School. Daniels’ family will be attending.

Newton Man charged with having sex with underage teen in parking lot

Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a suspicious vehicle call in Denver, where they found a partially clothed male and 14-year-old female inside the vehicle.

The call came in around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday about the vehicle located behind CVS Pharmacy on Webb's Road in Denver, officials said.

Catawba County Safe Communities Initiative discussed at council meeting

The city of Conover is part of ajoint initiative across the county working to keep cities safe.

The Catawba County Safe Communities Initiative is a partnership between eight law enforcement agencies which started in 2010.

“Our main focus and agenda is to reduce violence,” said Coordinator Charles Mackie at Monday’s City Council Meeting.

Noah Vess, age 4 of Conover, keeps cool while spending Monday afternoon at the splash pad at the Conover City Park. The splash pad is open Memorial Day to Labor Day, 11 a.m. until 8 p.m.

DA’s race is heating up

The race for District Attorney has heated up with early voting starting for the July 15 second primary.

In the 25th Prosecutorial District, incumbent Jay Gaither is running for his fourth term as the District Attorney for Catawba, Burke and Caldwell counties.

Gaither, a native of Newton, feels his 12 years of experience as District Attorney makes him the most qualified for the position.
