Fire Station construction ahead of schedule

After overcoming a rocky start in February, construction has blazed through on the new Newton Fire Headquarters on Brady Ave.

“As of right now, we’re a little ahead of schedule,” said Chief Kevin Yoder. “Our most current completion date is April 24.”

No need to be alarmed

Things could get a little quieter around Newton.

The Newton Fire Department's siren, which sits atop a pole across the street from the current fire station, was discussed during the Nov. 18 city council meeting.

Christmas cheer for 31 years

“We just want people to come out and enjoy the parade,” said Claremont Christmas Parade Director Danny Hedrick.

This Saturday, the Claremont Christmas Parade will make its annual debut – after 31 years of Christmas cheer, the parade has become the longest running Christmas Parade in Catawba County.

Santa’s Forest

John Herter and his daughter have a family tradition each Christmas season. They go out into their field of tall, green Leyland cypress trees and cut down a fresh tree to decorate in their home — sometimes even two.

Fighting fire with iPads

If you hear the wail of a fire engine and see one of Newton’s bravest tapping at the screen of an iPad inside, take comfort in knowing the firefighter is using the tablet to gather valuable information to better respond to the call. Thanks in part to a grant from FM Global, the Newton Fire Department’s vehicles all will soon be equipped with an Apple iPad loaded with lifesaving technology

Christmas in the Park

Conover just became a little brighter for the season after the city’s Christmas in the Park event on Tuesday evening. Event-goers were treated to hot chocolate, Christmas carols, hayrides, a visit from Santa Claus and the official ‘turning on the lights’ for the community Christmas tree.

Conover next for body camera trend

Conover Police Department will soon be adding another level of transparency to their department by investing in the use of body-worn video cameras.

“This has a lot of pluses for us,” said Chief Steve Brewer. “We can use to them to video evidence at crime scenes and it’s a way we can make ourselves more transparent to the public.”
